Alignment channel's stacking with other feats

Alignment channel says "Instead of its normal effect, you can choose to have your ability to channel energy heal or harm outsiders of the chosen alignment subtype." Does that mean whenever I choose to channel energy, like in the case of channel smite?

Oddly enough, I just had one of my PbP players ask me about this by email not 2 days ago. Here's what I told them:

I don't see any reason why the two shouldn't work together. Channel Smite simply requires you to activate your channel feature, and Alignment channel says, "Instead of its normal effect..." Therefore, exactly what would be affected by channel smite would be up to whatever you have 'set' your channel to affect. My guess is Paizo felt it was more concise to state "instead of its normal effect" once rather than being ambiguous and causing confusion in the myriad instances where the channel ability is printed.

So yes, you can use Alignment Channel to modify Channel Smite.
