I was thinking about the weapon proficiency feats, and thought what a waste of a good feat slot. So what if the rules for weapons were tinkered with in this manner-
Simple weapon proficiency treats all weapons as being equally useable, with no changes to the ways in which they are statted.
Martial weapon proficiency is a step up from simple. Perhaps this version would allow a character to gain an extra something from using the weapon (such as a +1 to hit or damage, or +1 to verify a critical hit).
Exotic weapon proficiency takes the proficiency with weapons even further by giving an extra bonus to hit or damage, or a shield or deflection bonus to AC, or something along those lines. These doodads stack with those gained from martial weapon proficiency.
Anyway, I've been up all night after a a visit to the dentist and eating Vicodin like Pez. Just some things I thought about.

Am I correct in understanding that, generally speaking, you guys are comfortable with other people using/altering your stuff so long as we're not publishing or claiming credit? I'm probably going to be incorporating these weapon rules this fall, as well as using some of Kirth's racial stuff to mix in with a massive racial overhaul I'm doing, and just wanted to doublecheck.

Do you realize that martial weapon characters don't burn any feat slots save for exotic weapons, and Wizards are the only characters that don't get simple for free? The only thing your change does is give non-martial characters access to weapons they shouldn't be using without putting investment into.
Using feat slots is not a "waste" it's currency you pay in order to get expanded capabilities for your character.

To my knowledge, Kirth does not mind people using/altering his houserules in any way. He would appreciate being credited however. I think over in the houserules thread we have someone who just posted his own tweaks that his group has been using. Asking him directly will be your best bet.

That's what I had in mind. However, my group caught wind of my wanting to tinker with the weapons rules and tasered me repeatedly until I changed my mind.

Clarification issued in that thread. If my houserules catch on, that's great, but let's all remember that my notes are an addition to the source material and are in no way intended as a substitute for it.
Sadly, it looks like that won't be an issue for Cal's group!
