Animal Growth

Rules Questions

I was looking at < this list of useful druid spells >. One of the recommended spells is Animal Growth. It looks to me like the animal must fail a Fortitude save for this spell to work. (It says 'Fortitude negates', not 'Fortitude negates (harmless)'.)
Since the animals I'd like to cast it on usually have a decent Fort save, that means I'm looking at a failure rate of around 50%. Is my interpretation of this spell correct?

Targets of spells can always choose to fail their saves automatically. Just inform you animal that it is in its best interest not to resist.

Hey, it looks like you're right. (Voluntarily Giving up a Saving Throw, page 217.) Now I just need to work out how to explain the concept to an animal...

Scruffy, dirty man clothed in rags, with leaves and twigs in his hair and weird smile closes to you saying "It's only for your own good, really, you have to believe me..."

Well, druid's animal-companion-for-life, knowing him for years would probably agree to fall the saving throw.

Pretty much. If this came up with me as GM I'd say an animal companion would trust you without explanation, other animals would not unless you used some spell or ability that lets you speak to animals to explain it to them beforehand.
