Seeking Clarification on Game Master Rewards

GM Discussion

Sorry if this is covered but I'm a bit unclear on one possible scenario that's about to come up here for our GM's.

It's clear that if you have a level 1 PC and you run a scenario at sub-tier 1-2 you get that credit. It's also clear that if you run one that you don't have a PC ready for then you hold the sheet.

I get what happens if your PC is between the sub-tiers.

What do you do if you have a level 4 PC and you run a scenario at level 1-2. Can you take the sheet for your level 4 PC at sub-tier 4-5?

In other words, can you take the scenario credit for the PC at the level appropriate for the PC?

thanks -

Pat,

My understanding of the GM reward system matches yours.

That is if you run a Tier 1-5 scenario at sub-tier 1-2 and you have a level 4 PC that you want to apply the chronicle to then you would use the sub-tier 4-5 gold and access (without any boons) for that PC.

If the PC you wanted to apply the chronicle to fell between the sub-tiers (level 3 in the above example) then you would apply the lower sub-tier to this PC.

What Eric said is my understanding as well.

..."It's also clear that if you run one that you don't have a PC ready for then you hold the sheet."...

So when you say this do you mean that I could run an adventure today, hold on to the sheet, and apply it to a character I make with options from ultimate combat after it comes out?

If you don't have any other character of a sub-tier available for the scenario you just ran, I don't see any reason why not? You hold the chronicle sheet until you have a chracter reach the first available level, even if that first available level was 1st for Tier 1-2, you don't currently have a 1st-5th or 1st-7th (depending on the scenario) character, and the first character that qualifies is a new 1st level character built using Ultimat Combat rules when that product is released, yes you could hold the chronicle sheet until then and apply it to that character. That is my understanding and how I'd rule it.

My understanding of Mark and Hyrum's position on GM rewards is close to Stephen's, but a little more generous.

Situation 1: You have a 5th-level character who has completed parts 1 and 2 of the "Shades of Ice" trilogy, and is ready to complete the trilogy in a week or two. Some friends ask you to GM a Tier 1-7 module that you haven't run before.

or

Situation 2: You have GMed several scenarios at the 5-9 tier, but don't have an appropriately-leveled PC. You do have a 4th-level PC, who just finishes the first part of "Shades of Ice" and earns his 12th XP, raising him to 5th Level.

Stephen's interpretation, as I understand it: in either case, you have two choices: you apply GM credit to the 5th-level character, moving him immediately to 6th level, or you lose the GM credit.

My interpretation: you can choose to apply GM credit to the PC, or not. If you choose not to do so, you cannot apply it later to the same character (say, when the PC becomes 8th level and you can apply a higher sub-tier of wealth). But if you choose to keep your current PC at 5th level, you don't lose that GM credit. You may apply it to some other PC at a later time.
