Acting like an animal

Let's say my druid is wildshaped as some animal in order to spy or just observe some area where people are about. Is it assumed that the druid knows how to behave like the animal so that they don't arouse suspicion, Or would they use a bluff or knowledge nature in order to act like the animal they have wildshaped into so that people don't wonder why that dog or whatever is acting so strange?

How about with other animals? If my druid wildshapes into a wolf or a rat, do the other animals treat him like another one of their kind or do I need to make some sort of roll to fit it?

I would rule it that, when interacting with other, intelligent creatures, it functions as a Disguise check against an opposed Sense Motive. In this case, the Druid would receive the normal bonus to their Disguise check for being magically transformed (I think its a +10 or +20; see Disguise Self).

Creatures with Intelligence 2 or lower (animals and such) would be unable to tell the difference. As it is a polymorph effect, the Druid looks and smells like whatever they've transformed into; they have the same height, weight, size, etc. I would, however, also say that a Druid's animal companion would be able to notice the change because of their close bond.


I wouldn't normally require a check. Either the druid is behaving like an animal or he's not.

I suppose it wouldn't be unreasonable to have the observer make a Knowledge(nature) check to figure out that a critter isn't behaving normally. The DC would be based on how differently the critter is acting.

Something like:
Bird flys overhead. DC 40
Bird circles overhead. DC 30
Bird lands on branch nearby DC 20
Bird lands outside tent DC 15
Bird flys into tent and perches on table DC 5

Typically wild animals shy away from humans. Any wild animal brazenly walking into a camp is sure to arose suspicions. While a wolf might make a brief appearance near a camp it won't come closer nor stay long. A rat would run and hide at the first sign of nearby movement.
