My dungeon... terrain

So....to make a long story short I bought some plaster and molds and began to make my own dungeon(dwarven forge is way overpriced). My players are loving it.It is alot of work however. But my issue is I'm not sure what to build next? I have so many ideas but don't know where to start. here is a few examples..

cavern
crypt
mining area
jail cells
sleeping areas

heres is a video to give an idea of where I am at in construction.

So throw me some Ideas and feedback guys...

wow, a lot of work, when I first read your description, I tought it was for very "3D" terrain, you built the normal "2D" dungeon however.
My suggestion would be:
mining area with collapsed wall that leads into fiend-infested tunnel.
Make rumbles, built several hight stages, make pointy rumbles.

Include as much area-rules as possible, so that PC's have to plan where exactly they are heading. The "generic" dungeon you've made so far is wonderful to play on, but doesn't offer much diversity.

still, I would love to play on such a map one time. (tough I prefer city areas)

I've had my best luck with modular stuff. I've a few trees, both in singles and in groups, a pile of rocks, a wall, etc.

That way, you can use them over and over again.

Silver Crusade

I like to use small wooden blocks. They are abstract and can represent anything. You can pile them up to make high areas or hills. I also use pebbles to represent difficult terrain.

thanks for the advice ...

I have tried wooden blocks but didn't quite have the feel i wanted.

But i figure I am going to make cavern pieces and perhaps some town or tavern pieces as well

Town and tavern pieces can be great. I use paper models for buildings and my players love them.

So much territory to cover here (pun intended).

I do a lot of work with terrain, but I focus on 3D terrain. I tend to create modular segments which I can rearrange into semi-random arrangements to keep things from being boring. I also use styrofoam rocks, hills, towers, ruins, etc. I generally place them on battle mats or pre-printed maps, or I place them alongside or overlapping my digital gaming table maps.

I use styrofoam and cut shapes out using hot wires and then paint them. I find the styrofoam approach to be easy, fast and cheap (since I have tons of free styrofoam from packing boxes).

I am also working on a full scale model of a palace which will have four stories and a top floor observatory. I currently have the first floor and part of the second floor done. I am making that out of foam poster board cut and glued together on pre-drawn grids of foam poster board. The end result is surprisingly light and sturdy. In fact I am using it as a temporary storage for a bunch of newly collected miniatures.

I also have some trees, rubble and other things that I can lay out for difficult terrain, tactical terrain, etc.

What I have found is that this can be a slippery slope. The more terrain I do, the more I want to do...

Some of the first terraian I built were hills, rock outcroppings, small groups of trees. From thre I moved on to farm houses (both intact and destroyed0. wells, fences, sheds, and other buildintgs that you might find along a road - like shrires, graves, stables inns, signposts, etc. Only after I had the rural stuff covered did I move on to urban terrain.

Sovereign Court

I have some dwarven forge stuff, the things I like best and want more of are tiles that help me build large rooms quickly. From the video it looks like you have lots of corridors, but not a lot of rooms.

Slightly off topic - The folks over at hirst arts do a very cool thing where they build modular terrain based on an old cd. I'll try to dig up some examples. Modular outdoor ruins and buildings are very cool.

Yes... I hang out on the hirst arts forums alot..

I have seen so many different designs that its crazy.

I have made some small ruins , and a small house to use on the mondo-mat.

Last night I started a collapsed hallway piece and a few more rooms...

my final goal is

20 hallway pieces
40- rooms ( various sizes )
10 special rooms ( jail cells, temple, pit and such)
and a undetermined number of 4way and 3 way connectors
