a soft cover? sniff sniff and whine....
I guess it will be like the guide to the river kingdoms, or the guide to the Mwangi expanse.
I was hoping for a nice big fat hard cover like the Inner sea world guide with a nice big map in it.
I am sure even with such a book, they would only scratch the surface.
Thank you.
I do think lots of the "chronicles of Golaron" books were very well written. For example, in my
opinion the Guide to Korvosa, and the City of Strangers stand head and shoulders over many
other products. I also like the RIver kingdoms, and the Guide to the Mwangi expanse, i think
many soft cover books in that line are very well written.

last i heard, yes, but i believe James Jacobs said it wouldnt be a hardcover most likely (to my sad disappointment) but it would be similar to the 64 page Chronicles line. thats the last i heard. its on the forums...somewhere!
If I remember that thread correctly I believe JJ said there would be a 64 page book but wasn't specific about it's contents. I'm hoping we'll see a Tian Xia Primer in the Companion line and the Campaign Setting book will just be about Minkai so that it can't be seen as a reason not to do the World Guide. As is often the case though I don't have the weight of popular opinion behind me (and as such an argument that it makes good business sense) so I'm not holding out too much hope

For answers, the wise prophet looks at what came before.
Our first reveal of the Inner Sea region was not a giant hardcover. It was a 64 page gazetteer called the "Gazetteer." That book had enough about the Inner Sea region for folks to get started in campaigns, and we later put out a hardcover that STILL wasn't perfect. It took us 3 years to get the core campaign setting book to the place we wanted it. And even then it was really difficult and tricky to pull off.
Whether or not we do more than what we're doing with the Jade Regent adventure path and its (mostly still unannounced) support books depends on how well folks take to those books.
I'll have more to say about the whole topic in a few weeks. Coincidentally, PaizoCon is also in a few weeks.

I suspect that to start they will be dividing up a lot of the information on Tian Xia over quite a few books. I know with the next adventure path they will likely have relevant articles showing up. The ninja and the samurai will be showing up in ultimate combat. The next Bestiary will likely expand on their love of real world mythology collecting not just Arabian and Russian info but also hopefully some Asian and Indian monsters as well.
I know that Mr Mona stated that if we want more Tian Xia stuff we need to buy the teasers they will start putting out come August, though he said even if we do not they will likely do a hard cover compilation that will combine, edit, and expand all the stuff they will be putting out in the next year or so (but I would think that would be about two years away from now at the earliest).
Honestly they have a very rich and exciting world with so many stories to develop (not to mention their planar information and other planets) that I am looking forward to getting the crunch books out of the way this summer and then having them spend more time focusing on the fluff they do so well.

I would buy the Tian Xia World Guide when it comes out, and the Tian Xia Gazetteer when that comes out too.

If you're worried that we'll keep the information secret and that only PaizoCon attendees will be privy to it... that's not going to happen. Not only will I be able to talk openly about things like this on these boards after Paizocon, and not only will we start putting those new announcements up on our store, but I suspect that folks AT PaizoCon will be tweeting and facebooking and blogging a lot of the information in real time.
If your counterpoints are for something else entirely, I can't help if I don't know what they are.

I've been to events where I've literally seen people compete to be the first to post things on forums so I wasn't overly concerned that everyone at Paizocon was going to be hoarding all the juicy information they receive.
Basically I think it would be hard for you to respond without referencing things you can't talk about yet and I imagine that is frustrating beyond belief. Thank you for offering to try though. It still amazes me how much time you guys spend on here conversing with the community.

I agree. There are a few that would say a government conspiracy. I don't believe it. Those people are ignoring the fact they are talking about the same government that can't seem to balance a checkbook, much less have the brains for a true conspiracy. It MUST be aliens.

So what I read is, if things sell well next year we might get a HB book of the region. Least thats what I read. :D

So Paizo con happened, and some of us lesser eastcost dwellers were not bale to make it:)
Any word on a Tian Xia guide?
Well they are going to have a Gaz coming out and I imagine it depends on how well it does if their is a hardback book in the future.

I'd forgotten about this thread.
First I'd like to say how everything I have read about the content and direction you're going in with Tian Xia is just what I was looking for.
My concerns at this stage boil down to a simple request that you factor in sales of all Tian Xia products, not just the Gazetteer, when deciding to do a World Guide or not.

Setting aside my obvious bias in favor of such books, I'm a big +1. My favorite fantasy settings for D&D were always the non-European locations, with Kara-Tur near the top of the list.

Wouldn't that be "because of" your bias? :-)

Have you read the "Judge Dee" murder mystery books by Robert Van Gulik?
"The chinese gold murders", " the Chinese Lake murders", the Chinese bell murders?"Myles Crocker.
I've read one or two of the short stories, thanks to an exceedingly well-read college friend. I'm more familiar with the recent film based on the original character. I've been looking for electronic copies of the books.
gbonehead: Yes, I didn't make that very clear. :)
Sanakht Inaros: Al-Qadim was also my favorite, but Kara-Tur was close behind.

Mr. Gross,
Thank you for pointing my nose in the direction of and actual movie about Judge Dee. Ill have to check this out.
Back in 95, i was photographing a student exchange program in China ( "The Experiment in International living" was the name of the program/company). I was only a few years older then the high school students, and in college myself. I brought along few of these Judge Dee books, and a book about Zheng He to read. While my chinese hosts, couldn't read the english in my books, they could read the chinese characters in the illustrations. and knew exactly whom i was reading about (both Judge dee and Zheng He). I remember how excited one of my hosts was, and he went and brought some other people to show them. My judge dee book was plucked out of my hands and it was passed around, as my host was pointing out the chinese characters and the illustration of Judge dee. I think it pleased my hosts that i was reading about their culture, and i think in some small way, these books helped to build a little bridge between us, and i think think my chinese hosts felt a little easier with me taking photographs.
I have always been fond of these books, and while I'm a photographer, and not a scholar, i feel these books have given me a small window into what life might have been like back then.
Time is always in short supply. I recently saw a TV add for something called Audiable.com. its a site with lots of audio books on it. I plan to check it out myself soon, to see if i can find some good books to listen too on long drives ( and short ones too). Perhaps that might be a place to find some Judge Dee books "on tape", or should i say, on "i-tunes".
Again thank you for letting me know that there is a movie about Judge Dee,
Myles Crocker

Al-Qadim was always my favorite campaign setting as well. I am really looking forward to the Casmaron Gazetteer. Until then the Dragon Empires Gazetteer looks awesome.
