So tonight, we were finishing up a part of book 2, Beast of Lepistadt.
WE came across a hole in the ground, where we noticed foot traffic, some decent tracking checks told us there were four medium sized humanoid type creatures with clawed feet that have been traveling in and out, and the most recent pass was within 24 hours.
So instead of going in (which for whatever reason the DM really wanted us to do/ was expecting) we decided to set up and ambush and wait out whatever was in there, since it had passed with in a day, we figured it might be a lair.
So come night time, out pop 4 ghasts, who promptly win initiative (just barely) and can smell us apparently, so our ambush results in no surprise round and the ghasts promptly setting upon us ( I thought that stunk, we might as well have camped outside the hole and fell asleep, but whatever)
So its four on four. Had we gotten to go first, witch could have easily lightening bolted them and been done with it (the plan was this pretty much) but instead the ghast jumps her and paralyzes her (and she gets the fever).
The next ghast paralyzes the barbarian and one jumps the alchemist but since she's and elf she's safe.
my ghast couldn't hit me (needed to roll a 17 or higher to get me)
so I back pedal and cast hide from undead, manage to manuver over to the witch who is bleeding, my plan was to heal and remove paralysis and have her end the fight.
Instead her ghast just kills her next round.
Gosh!
Anyway. The alchemist back pedals and mutates.
The barb remains paralyzed and her ghast keeps chewing on her.
So in the end the alchy end up getting two that grouped together with a bomb and I killed the other two, some with ranged attacks (pepperbox) and some melee by using a touch ability i get from pharasma domain power (can't remember the name of it) that basic let me kite the ghast after I staggered it.
The witch player is dead. Gone. On what was supposed to be a party of 6th levels ambushing 4 Cr 3s.... curious eh?
If I had gotten hit at all, and gotten paralyzed it could easily have been a tpk.
The witch player can't decide if shes going to make a Paladin or a Cleric next. The witch was our healer.
I thought it was an interesting encounter to report, not necessarily because I disagree with the DMs ambush ruling, but because of how the fight turned out.
