Point Blank Shot for Sorcerer?

Rules Questions

I asked this question before.

I was wondering if I should give a first level sorcerer the Point Blank shot feat. Will it let him add +1 to attack and +1 to damage of all his rays?

Yes it does. As to whether or not you should take precise shot and point blank shot depends on how much you will depend on ranged touch spells.

Our sorcerer needs to focus on damage. As we have a bard in the group that focuses on controlling (whip / net). Not sure of the spells for the sorcerer yet....

I don't think the single point of damage is going to get him very far in terms of damage.

The to-hit could be nice at lower levels, but later on I don't think the feat is going to be much use.

I think he is better of spending his feats on Spell focus, and spell penetration

What kind of sorcerer is he?

if the the ray isn't an auto hit then Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot both apply which will be vital, IMO, for a blaster type sorcerer. Without you suffer the -8 for firing into melee/soft cover.

Spell Focus and Spell Penetration can wait a while.

I would (and do) take Point Blank and Precise Shot first, Spell Focus as my third and Spell Penetration as my fourth feat.

Yes, it's main importance however is as the pre-req to Precise Shot, so if you're going to be ray blaster, they're essential.

This is the Celestial sorcerer, right?

Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot are definitely useful for the ray specialist.

Thats right!

What kind of ray spells would there be? I can only find Scorching Ray

Barring any additional materials (Spell Compendium had a lot too) here are the ones in Core:

Disrupt Undead 0
Ray of Frost 0
Ray of Enfeeblement 1
Scorching Ray 2
Ray of Exhaustion 3
Dimensional Anchor 4
Enervation 4
Disintegration 6
Polar Ray 8

There are no rays (in core) for 5,7,9 however with meta feats that allow element changes (or elemental bloodlines), scorching ray gets a lot of depth. Also, metamagic rod of maximize with an 11th level sorcerer nets you a nice 72 damage.

It will work with her Heavenly Fire bloodline power. In fact, if the PCs are Good (like the Paladin), then you probably don't need the Point Blank/Precise feats. If you accidentally hit your own guy, he's healed instead of harmed, so no harm, no foul.

Note that Point Blank Shot does not add to the healing of Heavenly Fire.

Otherwise, Ray of Enfeeblement, Acid Arrow, Scorching Ray, and the cantrips Acid Splash, Disrupt Undead, and Ray of Frost pretty much cover your Level 0 - 2 options.

One spell that might be of interest is Gravity Bow. Do you have an archer in the group? Since a Sorcerer gets 1/2 BAB, it's a hard path, but Point Blank and Precise Shot will also work with mundane and magical ranged weapons as well as with spells.

But those feats will apply to any spell which requires a "to hit" check...

so Acid Arrow, Acid Splash, Flame Arrow, etc, etc...

Thank you- for now she has her only feat on spell focus for Grease / Glitterdust etc.

But as we have a bard with a whip and net - i tought of focusing our sorceress on rays as she has a dex+2.

She is a newbie and maybe it would be easier to make damage instead of control.....

Yes, but within 30 feet.

Ah, Spell Focus: Conjuration! Given that the Celestial's Arcana is a DR bonus to summoned creatures, I would normally recommend adding Augment Summoning and let her send summoned creatures into battle, but that can get complicated quickly. A blaster/archer role is good for a newbie.

The easy spell to get the newbie involved and interested is Magic Missile. No hit, just damage. Make sure she has a crossbow or some spears as well. Add Magic Weapon (to be eventually swapped out, probably for Summon Monster I?) and say it's what to cast before combat begins, if she can.

Once she's had a few levels and is ready for the next step, then she can take Augment Summoning and add friendly monsters to her repertiore.

what effect does spell focus conjuration have on summoned monsters?

For Grease i understand its +1 to the Reflex save.

So this means I should decide if she should focus on rays and add point blank shot and precise shot - or on summoning and use spell focus conjuration and summone monsters (which might be more tricky for a newbie)

Shadow Lodge

Spell Focus: Conjuration has no effect on summoned monsters. However, it is a prerequisite to another feat, Augment Summoning. That feat gives all summoned monsters +4 Str and +4 Con.

So it doesn't help by itself, but it's a gateway to better summoning.
