If you make a full attack with natural weapons (claw/claw/bite) does the bite take the -5 and get half bonus from strength? By RAW that's how it works but I thought I saw a thread a while back where James mentioned that this was forgotten bad wording that was written assuming the barbarian the barbarian was wielding a weapon (and thus natural weapons are secondary).

James Jacobs light me in my darkest hour!

Scarab Sages

I don't know if such a thread exists, but I imagine the intent of the ability is as you suspect, that the bite attack is only secondary when using manufactured weapons.

I would rule that it only counts as a secondary attack if used alongside manufactured weapons.

Liberty's Edge

Well I haven't been able to find it so it seems I completely imagined that thread.

How often does Mr. Jacobs visit these parts?

as written it is always a secondary attack. I'n a way this is fine as it let's you bite when you normally couldn't ie while maintaining a grapple. well before the maintain.

From the Universal Monster Rules part of the PRD, Bite and Claw attacks are always primary natural weapons. When used alongside other natural attacks, a Bite is primary. However, any and all natural attacks used alongside manufactured weaponry are always secondary.

When only attacking with natural weapons, it does not take the associated penalties of -5 BAB and 1/2 STR bonus. If your attack is claw/claw/bite, they are all at full BAB and get full STR bonuses. However, if your bite is your ONLY natural attack, it gets 1 1/2 STR bonus if its the only attack you use.
