Griffon Mount Companion

Rules Questions

One of my fellow players wants a griffon mount for their cavalier. However, cavalier mount rules follow the rules for animal companions (for the most part) which are all animals.

Is there any established way of getting an unusual mount like a griffon? My GM has asked me to look into it for him.

Have you checked out Advanced Options: Cavaliers' Orders from Super Genius Games?

One of the orders is actually the Order of the Griffon - it give complete rules on gaining a griffon mount!

>>> Advanced Options: Cavaliers' Orders

Per RAW I don't think he can get one.

Mount (Ex): A cavalier gains the service of a loyal and
trusty steed to carry him into battle. This mount functions
as a druid’s animal companion, using the cavalier’s level as
his effective druid level. The creature must be one that he
is capable of riding and is suitable as a mount. A Medium
cavalier can select a camel or a horse. A Small cavalier can
select a pony or wolf, but can also select a boar or a dog if he
is at least 4th level.
The GM might approve other animals
as suitable mounts.

But, nothing stops him from finding one and training it via Handle Animal for a mount.

Actually, the rules do allow for other mounts. Check out the very next line after your bolded text:

No, the rules leave it in the GMs hands. That is not an allowance for other mounts, that is a case by case basis. So per RAW, which is what I quoted, no other mounts are allowed.

Heh heh ....

Well, since RAW stands for Rules as Written, and the sentence The GM might approve other animals as suitable mounts is actually *written* in the mount section of the cavalier write up, it's pretty clear that the rules DO allow for other mounts, if the GM wishes.

So, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this point, friend ...

Back to the original question ... like I said, I would really recommend that you check out the Order of the Griffon I mentioned above. It's pretty much exactly what you are looking for, even if you just transport the rules for the griffon mount into your game.

Funny thing is that we don't disagree. We both state that the GM can rule in other mounts but that is not a guarantee, which is the point I was trying to make. The rules state it's a possibility, nothing more than that.

The established way is your DM can say yes. Griffons are a bit beyond the expected power level of a cavalier mount. So unless you're going to hang your DM for going outside of RAW, it's his discretion.

if you look on the blogs there is a ranger archetype posted that has either hippogryph griffon stats for being an animal companion. it should be usable for what you want want.

I realize this post is three years later, but for anyone else with this question should look at the feat: Monstrous Mount at d20pfsrd link for Monstrous Mount.
