Hi, I'm playing this character in a PbP right now and having a blast. We're at 3rd level, probably hitting 4th soon, and so far I've got 3 levels of Rogue under my belt. I currently dual wield a shortsword and a dagger, but my current plan is to go my 4th and 5th levels as a Ranger (picking up medium armor proficiency and shield proficiency) and eventually end up a stealthy, deadly, sword and board styled Assassin.

We'll be hitting 4th level soon, so I get my first attribute bonus and I don't know where it should go. I'm torn between strength and intelligence, because both of them will prove very useful and grant me a better attribute bonus (15 to 16): strength for damage output is obviously nice, but because I'll be prestige classing into Assassin after 5th level and their Death Attack ability's DC depends on their intelligence bonus, I'm torn. The truth is, I've never played an Assassin before, so I don't know how useful the death attack ability is--though my DM seems excited in my choice of Assassin, and so I hope be giving a fair amount of encounters that would lend themselves to the style.

I just thought I'd throw it up to the boards and see what comes back, so thanks ahead of time for anyone taking the time of reading and responding :)

What is your int score?

If you want to play an assassin as a concept then avoid the Assassin PRC. It is about the worst assassin there is. The guide ranger variant is one I like. I would rename ranger's focus into assassin's mark to simulate his focus on making sure a certain target dies, but if you must play the Assassin PRC and plan on using the death attack then go with the int score. I would take ability focus for the death attack also. Not much is worse than setting it up for 3 rounds then having the enemy make the save.

My current ability scores are:

Str 15
Dex 18
Con 13
Int 15
Wis 12
Cha 10

Also, if anyone else also has specific questions about the build, this forum alias is my character sheet.

Hmmm. While I'm not 100% married to the idea of the Assassin PRC, I really like the flavor of my planned mixture: a flanking front-line fighter (with breastplate, sword, and shield), Death Attack, and a pretty decent skill-monkey to boot.

Since I'm already planning on dipping into Ranger for two levels, though, thanks for reminding me about the Guide variant. I had forgotten it, and it really does lend itself nicely to an Assassin-like character. I also hadn't known about the Ability Focus feat, which I looked up and, turns out, it's a Monster Feat. Are there rules about PC's taking Monster Feats, or would that require the DM's ruling?

It is in the monster book because it normally only applies to monsters, but there is no real such thing as a monster only feat. Ability Focus applies to Supernatural and Extra Ordinary affects that require a DC. If you were to find a way to get natural armor, IIRC dwarves can, then you could take improved natural armor as a feat. Your GM can say no, but that is a house rule. The only thing you need to take a feat is to meet the prereqs.
