Ok,
I need some ideas for what races would inhabit arctic tundra and wastelands.
Right now, I have just the following :
Arctic Drow - These drow were driven from their underground cities in the mountains and forced to live in the wastelands. As a result, they've adapted to the cold and harsh light. They are no longer sensitive to light, but they have also lost some of their darkvision as a species (60 feet instead of 120 feet). This is a gameworld thing, based on history.
I need to figure out what other races would be in the area, mostly vassals of the drow, and secondary citizens. The reason this is difficult is that none of the core races are there anymore (also history). So no humans, no dwarves, no halflings, no other elves.
So, I'm going to have to dig through the bestiaries and see if I can find something that would be able to live there. Prefer to stay away from Duerger or Sneviblen (Sp?), I have a place for them. I thought I'd post and see if anyone had ideas and good reasons their suggestion would be able to live there. For example, lizardfolk don't make a good fit, nor do the frog people. :) Kobolds are kind of out as well, and Tengu, for obvious reasons. :)

I've always seen troglodytes associated with drow in alot of published material? Although they are really similar to lizzardfolk, and kinda weird to have reptiles who are cold blooded in the cold.
What about ogres and trolls? They are "cold" region critters.
Frost Giants, Winter wolves, Worgs....
are we looking for humanoid types?
maybe darkstalkers all bundled up??

Thanks all.
Yeah, I have these as Sentient races so far...
Arctic Drow, Ettin, Frost Giants, Ogres, Ogre Mages, Troll, Yeti, White Dragons, Frost Drakes, Rune Giants, Taiga Giants, Ice Troll, Wendigo
And these as creatures.
Crag Linnorms, Ice Linnorms, Ice Elementals, Frost Worm, Winterwight, Normal Arctic Animals
I like the idea of Yeti as enslaved shock troops. Works wonderfully. Thanks! Hadn't thought of that dynamic.
Winter wolves and Worgs I'd overlooked as they're mostly cold forest types, not winter waste types (This is more like northern Canada, few forests, mostly ice, snow and wind. However, I could see the worgs and winter wolves in the nearby frozen mountains (where there are trees and forests) migrating down if plied with compliments by the drow, slowly forming alliance with them.
Kobolds and Goblins I have a couple of really great places for, so no need to make them freeze in the cold. :)

You know what would be intersting, is maybe a twist on Kua-toa or Shuaghin to make a custom Orca-type, arctic amphibean race, black and white carnivorous porpoise people?

That would be interesting. But I'm trying to avoid custom races (I already have 2, plus modifications to 3 others). However, I may put a note of 'Arctic Kua-toa', or whatever the replacement was in Bestiary I in the description of the area and stat it up later.

I was thinking about selkies (were seals), so were-walruses would work as well.

lycanthropes would still need a base species (since they are atemplate adder.) so you would need to pick a base racial stock for em.
types that would be fitting would be were...bear, wolf, seal, walrus, moose, elephant(mammoth) as several off the top of my head. tiger also (smilodon)

Hmm,
Were-bears certainly (polar were's are nasty). Smilodons are temperate creatures though. Were-seals, were-selkies. All of them would be either Drow, Yeti, or possibly Troll/Giant base creatures. Woah, ice giant were polar bear. Nasty piece of work!
Were-wolves could work, in the south eastern part, where there are some evergreen forests.
Same for the caribou and moose (I keep wanting to call multiple mooses mise). :)

I can't help with races, but animals include wolves, bears, ermines, deer, porcupines, caribou, lynxes, foxes, and penguins.
How silly is your campaign? Penguin-illid would be quite funny (imagine a penguin with a squid for a head). A were-porcupine might cause a PC to need new pants.

I keep the silly to specific little pockets of the world. There's a hobgoblin tribe that got cursed by a god of nature after they took over his temple and started living there. They're obsessed as a tribe now with learning how to be farmers. :) But they're cursed, so they can't ever get it right. They make sure the mushrooms get plenty of light, 24/7. They make sure the dirt the rice is planted in is very dry and kept in a dim area. The corn is always planted in at least 3 inches of water, so it has all it needs. :) The only reason they don't starve is that the nature god's temple is built around a giant tree that has every natural fruit and vegetable hanging on it's limbs for them to eat. :)

smilodons = temperate sure, "technically"... but you can easily go for an ice-age style feel for the bitter northlands, and have the non dinosaur prehistorics being some of the critters found. hence, smilodons, mastodons, etc etc. just give the kittys thicker fur.
