Necklace of Adaptation vs. Suffocation (APG spell)

Rules Questions

Does this work?

As far as I can see, the necklace does not actually remove the need to breathe. It just negates environmental factors such as poison and vacuum. Does it protect against forced suffocation by the spell or other means?

I would definitely say the necklace does not protect against suffocation because it just creates a layer of breathable air around the wearer. Suffocation draws air from the lungs of the target on a failed save and keeps air from being allowed back in on each unsuccessful save.

Now if he had an iridescent ioun stone, that might be a different story.

You could choke him, fill his lungs with water (via spell, not immersion), or restrict his airway (i.e. Strangle).

However cloud spells, immersion in water or similar liquid, teleporting into space, etc would not have any affect on his ability to breath.
