So, my imp animal companion I get from the Diabolist presteige class is amazing. Speceifically, when you dump a bunch of points in UMD, give it the Hermean Blood and Magical Apitude feats, and hand it a wand of fireball. What do you guys think?

Why in the name of all that's unholy would an imp have Hermean blood? They come from Hell, they're not part of a dragon's questionable eugenics program!

RAW, it could probably work. But fluff wise, it would be impossible. Imps are made from lemures, which are made from the Damned, which are Hell's Petitioners. That means that the feat has to survive:

1. The character's death and their transformation into one of the Damned (which won't happen, since Petitioners lose all feats when they acquire the template).

2. Their eventual transformation into a Lemure (which, if I remember correctly, aren't always a single damned soul but made up of a couple).

3. The lemures being shaped into Imps (and there being three lemures to an imp).

If an imp somehow kept that feat, all the way through that... Well, I don't think I want my familiar to be a more unique and important character than my main one.

You'd also probably find lots and lots of Mengkare's agents hunting your imp down with really powerful magics. Since it is unbelievably unlikely that a Gold Dragon who puts that much time and effort into his "plans" is going to ignore it when Devils start reaping the benefit, even if it is only an imp. Especially when it's strongly suggested that he torches humans that aren't up to snuff for his breeding purposes. And that feat gives permission to the GM to target the person taking it with Hermean agent's if he wants.

So raw yes, fluff no, implications bad.

If you want to spend points bumping the UMD score up for now I'd suggest:

Skill Focus: UMD (a +3 instead of +2 from magical aptitude) and Extra Traits to take Dangerously Curious (+1 UMD and UMD a class skill) along with another trait.

In the end this pair will give you a +2 more as well as another trait for your IMP.

Later on trade this guy in and spend the feats better.

Liberty's Edge

In fact, Skill Focus : UMD + Magical Aptitude will get the Imp even 1 better. and 5 more if it ever gets 10 ranks in UMD.

Does either make the UMD skill a class skill?

No -- but additional traits does and gives another +1 bonus while leaving you open to also take devout for a +1 on their will saves.

That would be my suggestion 3 posts above... the other poster was suggesting replacing that with magical aptitude for some reason.

Magical aptitude will end up with the same end bonus and give a bonus to spellcraft to boot.

Trait = +1 +3 class bonus +1 will save
Magical Aptitude = +2 (+4 at 10 ranks) +2 to spellcraft (+4 at 10 ranks)

Just depends on what you want out of your imp. If you want a different magic trait for some reason then I could see taking magical aptitude instead.
