Playing the Zombie

Advice

How would you go about generating a viable zombie player-character (don't ask)?

The standard zombie template is no good, as it's a subtractive one and doesn't have much, if any, room for advancement, so I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas or suggestions? Is there a 3.5-era splatbook that enables zombie characters?

I'm sure I can build a suitable ruleset for such a character, but I wanted to check to see if any work had already been done.

Thanks!

well there is the Dhampir in the Beastiary 2. It's not a zombie but it is RAW. If that doesn't do it for you, you might consider just giving the character all the base undead abilities/weaknesses and call it the "zombie" race since I assume he would be free willed and not mindless like most zombies.

....

I'm not sure I'd see the reasoning for a zombie to advance and level up...

Disclaimer: I have not seen the Pathfinder Zombies yet....

If "I" were going to do it... I'd probably take whatever stat blocks and powers they have in the books... and just 'evolve' him... Zombie, ghoul, ghast.... Not sure what they have over that, but it's all pretty much the same flesh eating undead corpse creature for different leveled heroes.

That would be where I would start it... not sure how to build 20 lvl class out of it though....

Green Ronin's Advanced bestiary has a Dread Zombie Template that is a little better for a player, you don't lose all your int, just -4, and gain some decent stuff

hd increase, gain some NA, Channel Resistance,

you can grapple and eat brains!

Libris Mortis also has a undead template "necropolitan"

type changed to undead
HD go up
turn/control resist.
lets you heal HP at the same rate as a living creature, but positive enegery hurts, negative heals.
no con score, but no ability changes.

there is a ritual involved, gotta spend some xp and die. etc.

You could also just take the Base creature/ player and change their type to undead. removed all the humanoid racials, and add the undead ones, let them keep playing as normal, except they are undead, and all that comes with it. no healing from positive energy.

Grand Lodge

Also using an intelligent undead might work as well. Use the base ghoul, and remove it's bite and paralysis and it should be good.

The 3.0 Book of Vile Darkness, had rules for playing "Corpse Creatures". You could look into that. It was a template, and it I remember correctly, the creature kept its mental ability scores.

Juju zombie of course! It's a little powerful, but it's a great starting place.

Good ideas all, thank you!
