Animal companions...

Advice

when you are making an animal companion, do you get to do some rolling or point by for them?

nope.

Doing either of those would be 100% a house rule for a GM to make.

Animal Companions are strictly built off the tables applicable (ie base animal with its subsequent level bump) and its modifiers for your Level.

On the other hand are you possibly talking about a COHORT etc under the Leadership Feat?

Its an animal companion right now. Just trying to figure out why PCGEN is retarded..

Eventually, I hope to ask the GM to make my mount my cohort instead of just a mount.

Also trying to figure out how a creature can have greater than 3 int and if there is any way to improve the animals int.

So far I've got eye for talent.

Stat increases for hit dice can raise an animals Int above 2.

As above, stat increases for HD, or maybe some stat jiggling when it becomes a 'cohort'.

Cohorts are notionally built, and over time they may include class levels.

As you stated, the first thing to do is ask your GM for help because he can simplify this whole procedure by just making your animal companion a cohort and calling it a day. If your GM is a RAW nut, as many are, then recommend a roleplaying scenario where your character encounters a high level druid. The druid can cast Awaken on your companion and tell it to follow you. This grants your companion 3d6 int, so on average it will raise it to 11. As well this will increase the charisma and HD of the creature.

The one drawback with Awaken is that the animal will no longer be your companion and could decide that it is tired of risking its life going into dark, dreary, and dangerous dungeons with you.

It can, however, be a Cohort.

Yeah basically the problem is, as I've had with 3.5 in the past.. I'm playing cavalier and I get a mount. But I want to be able to go into battle herald. (We are playing the kingmaker campaign, and I'm running the character destined to be king.. if he doesn't die.)

But this means I lose out on at least 11 levels of character that would increase my mounts stats. So like 3.5, I'm going to ignore the fact I have a mount at a certain level, probably when I get a cohort.

So its either I get a mount I can level up with me, or I get a cohort I can level up with me. (and whenever I feel like it I bring out the mount.)

In 3.5 I would typically do the trick of "acquire familiar" in order to have one that properly leveled with me. (flaw out the first one, at third level take the feat to gain a familiar, and then I had one based on caster level)

neither: animal companions have specific starting stats, depending on the animal you choose.

take the boon companion feat which lets you add 4 effective levels to your animal companion.... that way your cavalier 10 / battle herald 4 character has an animal companion as if he would be a cavalier 14.

Well you have to take one level of bard. And its +4? I guess having a level 13 companion isn't too bad.

For some reason I thought it was +2.
