I'm not a fan of familiars, which is usally not a problem....however...
I want to play a changeling witch in our upcomming Carrion Crown game, and I was thinking of asking the DM if I could take the Wizard item bond feature (adding the store spell feature to it) as an alternative to having a familiar.
From a role play angle it would simply be using the item as a conduit to her patron, which makes sense to me....and I don't see anything "broken" mechanically with the idea, but I thought I would ask if anyone can think of a reason this would be unbalancing before I pitch the idea to the GM.

I do see a few problems:
1. The item repairs everyday -- as such you'll never lose your spells like a normal witch can.
What if she had to perform the same ritual to repair the item that a witch must use to replace her familiar the next day ?
2. How are you storing your spells in your item? Remember a witch communes with her familiar to get her spells per day -- which is going to be hard to do with an item.
I was looking at the item as a conduit directly to her patron (in this case Magdh), in other words she meditates with the item to commune with her patron, while preparing spells for the day.

Those would help with my worries.
I would suggest a witch would have a different item type available to her:
wands, rings, staves, rods, orbs, amulets, crowns (not headbands)
I'm not sure I would include any other options -- those seem more "witch" to me than the wizard's list.
The plan was a carved hardwood walking stick (treat as Hanbo) with bells and feathers tied to it, and the image of three faces carves at the top :)

one thing you should clear with your GM, do people know witches can have bonded items?
Someone sundering/stealing your walking stick could be your doom.
This gets all the more likely, the more people know that you (or witches in general) have bonded items.p.s. I like your avatar image :)
True.....I'll have to give that some thought.
I'm also trying to figure out which patron spell list just SCREAMS Magdh to me....but not having a lot of luck. I may have to make one...
If the Norns are kind....maybe they will release previews of new patron spell lists before we start playing ;)
P.S. That's a very handsome avatar image you have there yourself ;)

I don't really see a problem depending on flavor, a witches familiar is a little bit better than a normal familiar because it has an easier time being the designated toucher.
The nature of the object could perhaps be an intelligent item of some kind or perhaps a classic divination-device like a crystal ball (not necesarily the magic item) that might hint at you communicating with your patron to gain your powers.
I like witches more than wizards, who seem to be terribly boring spellslingers with no theme or flavor to their spells.
If your GM thinks it takes away too much of your disadvantage maybe suggest one or more taboo or weakness that reflects your patron, like being vulnerable to silver or holy water, unable to eat meat, not being allowed to touch someone of the opposite sex, specific mandatory rituals or sacrifices of some kind.

I'd allow a witch to bond to an item. But it would have to be a cauldron, magic mirror, or something similar. Something witchy.
I'm using a Volva as the idea that I'm moving towards with this character.....you don't get much "withier" than that ;)
My retirement plan for her is that she will become a Norn (see lesser factions in Inner sea).
