Is anyone out there an expert on Colony Collapse Disorder. I have only recently heard of this, but apparently it's been going on for several years now. Essentially, bee colony populations are rapidly declining. The exact causes haven't yet been determined, but it seems to be a result of a number of factors including wide spread use of commercial pesticides.

Why should we care?

Because bees pollinate a large percentage of the food crops we eat, and without them there will be enormous food shortages and vastly increased food prices.

If the bees go, we go.

I think they established the cause as parasites. Then again, I get my news (and username) from Futurama, so maybe you shouldn't believe me.

Last thing I recall from the scientific literature, it's likely a combination of parasites, pesticides, and climate change. Possibly a few other factors.

Bummer. If the bees go, no honey! No honey = no mead! ARRRGGHHH!!!

Don't worry—only the alien bees left.

So, now we just need someone to come up with Space Bee stats for Paizo. Maybe one of Golarion's moons can have a colony.....

I love how these boards can take any topic and somehow get it link backed to geek culture. I'm not sure if I'm trying to be sarcastic or not.

We are a "special" lot. Vic more than most.

I thought a few months ago some proof was presented that the cause was pesticides => a particular brand that caused neurological damage to the bees.

Bah! Another hoax just like Climate Change. Why do you hate America?!

I understood that cellphone radiation from cellphone towers are also potentially a culprit...but that information was in 2009 so i don't know if it is still true. Apparently the frequency range interferes with the ability of worker bees to navigate back to their nest and also how they communicate with each other.

But pesticides, micro-organisms and GMO crops are also probably part of the problem.

A quick bit of research suggests the combination of a fungus and a virus, though other factors may exacerbate things a bit. Look up Colony Collapse Disorder on Wikipedia. Note that I haven't gone and dug up their sources, so let's take it for what it's worth.

Well, if you folks really want to know the truth.....

Bees are, and always have been, an advanced species from 2,000 years into the future. They came back through time centuries ago to put into motion an eons long manipulation of history in order to ensure their own inevitable rise as our Honeyed Overlords. Now that their plan has reached fruition, they are slowly transporting themselves back to their original time.

As long as they keep supplying me with mead, I'll happily serve our buzzing masters!

Sadly, they aren't due to actually seize control of Earth until roughly 300 years from now.
