Trample, animal companion horse vs. light combat horse

Rules Questions

Ok, trying to make sense of mounted combat. As I read it the animal companion horse has hoof secondary (even if combat trained since bite is primary) and a combat trained 'light' horse has hoof primary. So when using Trample the animal companion will get a -5 to hit but a combat trained horse from the market will have no penalty?

I think it's an oversight in the AC rules due to them expecting people to take wolves, tigers, etc. I'm running into the same problem with my ranger and the horse that I had him buy to start out with the intent of it becoming his AC at L4 -- it will actually lose a feat and a trait or 2 (IIRC, the stats aren't handy for me right now).

Page 301/302 of the Bestiary, Natural Attacks, will help clear this up.

Basically, hooves are always supposed to be secondary, if they can be. But if they are the only attack the creature has, no matter what, the attack becomes primary and takes no penalty. The only overriding exception to this is in the Animal type, if it is a non-combat herbivore, all of its attacks are secondary, no matter what.

So, you got shafted because your Animal Companion can bite. If it weren't able to bite and could only hoof, it wouldn't take the penalty.
