Does the 5% come off the base price or the cost to make? I'm guessing the cost to make but i want to make sure.
You apprenticed for a time to a craftsman who often built magic items, and he taught you many handy shortcuts and cost-saving techniques.
Benefit: Whenever you craft a magic item, you reduce the cost of gp required to make the item by 5%.
The hedge magician discount takes 5% off the cost to make the item.
The base cost for a 3rd level standard caster potion would be 750 gp. This would cost 375 GP to brew normally or (375 * .95)= 356.25 gp to brew with hedge magician.
This seems like the hedge magician is getting is getting half the value he might, until you realize that the cost of expensive material components is part of the cost of scribing a scroll. Is this cost also reduced for a hedge wizard?
For example, Wizard is scribing a scroll of stoneskin at caster level 7. The cost to make the scroll is 700 gp (base)/2 =350 +250 (expensive diamond stuff) =600 gp *.95= 570 ? I wonder if there's a spell with a material component expensive enough to make scribing it as a scroll cheaper than casting it.
It reduces the standard item creation cost only. The material component cost, like the masterwork item/special material for weapons and armor, is counted separarately from the item creation cost.
Note that this is still a nice benefit for a character, over the long term. They only pay 47.5% of the item creation cost, instead of 50%. Once they start making items with a market price above 10,000 gp, the savings start to add up. 2.5% may not seem significant when making items with a market price of less than 1,000 gp, but it looks a bit different with when making items with a market price of 50,000 gp or more (when the character with this trait saves an extra 1,250+ gp).
