What weapons can be one size category larger and still be used by a medium?

Rules Questions

Cruising throw the forums I have come across the topic of making certain weapons one size category larger? Also in the APG I noticed that the hammer of thunderbolts is now a Large warhammer.

Some weapons that can be bumped up for fun and still be used with a -2 to hit.
Large dwarven waraxe 2handed
Large Bastard sword 2handed

Anyone else have fun with an over sized weapon and a grumpy drunk dwarf bard or other Race/class combinations :)

Yar!

Any Light weapon can be made large and wielded as a One-Handed weapon.

Any One-Handed weapon can be made large and wielded as a Two-handed Weapon.

Each size category change adds a cumulative -2 to hit.

So a Large longsword would have to be wielded as a Two-Handed weapon, would do a base of 2d6 damage, and would have a -2 to hit.

A Large dagger would be wielded as a One-Handed weapon, would do a base of 1d6 damage, and would have a -2 to hit.

A Huge dagger would be wielded as a Two-Handed weapon, would do a bade of 1d8 damage, and would have a -4 to hit.

Some weapons change size categories depending on proficiency. Bastard Sword and the Sawtooth Sabre for example.

In the case of the Bastard Sword, you could only wield a Large Bastard Sword as a Two-Handed Weapon if you also have Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Bastard Sword. It would be at a -2 to hit, but would do a base of 2d8 damage.

The Sawtooth Sabre is normally a One-Handed weapon, so it could be made Large, wielded Two-Handed, do 2d6 base damage, and be at a -2 to hit. If however you have Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Sawtooth Sabre, it is now treated as a Light Weapon! Now if you make it large, it does 2d6 base as a One-Handed Weapon at a -2 to hit. You can also make it Huge, wield it Two-Handed, do a base of 3d6 damage, and have a -4 to hit.

The parts of the core that tell you this are:

Page 144: Inappropriately Sized Weapons
Page 145: Table 6-5: Tiny and Large Weapon Damage

As for having fun with this... sometimes, yes. I once had a dwarf who would only use weapons that had to be wielded with both hands, and would carry as many on his person as possible at the same time. He once had an audience with a the local lord/king, and his simple walk up to meet him left the royal carpet in shredded tatters behind him (all of his bladed weapons were stored blade down, and thus dragged on the ground behind him, leaving a trail of sparks and general destruction as he walked).

The Sawtooth Saber is only counted as a light weapon for the purposes of Two Weapon Fighting and the associated penalties, so a large Sawtooth Saber would still count as a two handed weapon. At that point it is too large for a medium sized creature to hold in one hand, and it never functions otherwise (at small, medium, or large size) meaning you can't use Weapon Finesse or any other ability that requires a light weapon.

A large Aldori Dueling sword would allow you to wield it two handed while still using Weapon Finesse, and be a more damaging weapon than an Elven Curve Blade for a finesse fighter.

Mind my ignorance, but... where is that distinction made? I do not have the original Golarion/pathfinder campaign setting book, nor do I have the Inner Sea book yet. I've been going off of the Adventurer's Armory description of the Sawtooth Sabre, which is in whole, this:

This is the signature weapon of the notorious Red Mantis. A proficient user can treat a sawtooth sabre as a light weapon; otherwise, treat it as a longsword.

Thanks,

Ahhhh, forgot about that. It's updated as of the Inner Sea World Guide to only count as light for the purposes of TWF. The new entry has it functioning as a one handed weapon for everything else.

Yar.

Cool, and thanks. I shall now scratch the Huge Sawtooth Sabre as a possibility, as it is no longer legal.

*Waits impatiently for Inner Sea World Guide to arrive*

Thats a great shame!

I would really like to see this with enlarge person and lead blades, for a weapon damage of 6d6.

Thanks for the replies, got an idea on a new character later :) when my current ones bite the dust.
