ALL XP awards given out in a Pathfinder adventure are intended to be split evenly among all PCs. Individual XP awards aren't really good for the game, since that creates an unnecessary and possibly disruptive artificial sense of competition.
If you discover a clue that grants a 50 XP award, that amount gets split up among the party. If you have the standard 4 PCs in a group, that basically means each PC gets 12 XP (round fractions down).
Not a lot, but enough, hopefully, to reward the PCs for progressing the adventure's storyline.

And presumably, the xp is also awarded if no research takes place, but a character just knows the information by making the appropriate check?
A character "just knowing the info by making the check" IS research. It's just easier research than looking through books or talking to locals. It doesn't matter how the PCs learn the clues and info, as far as XP awards care.
