Ranged weapon and AoO

Rules Questions

Using a ranged weapon(bow) against a melee combatant(in a square I threaten) provokes an Attack of Opportunity...yes? How about when base to base and using a ranged attack at against an enemy at range?

I know this was the case in 3.5...but I can't find it ANYWHERE in the PRPG Core Book. I have had a player tell me(as a DM) that I'm wrong. Im about to house rule that it provokes...

Sorry for what is going to be a somewhat simple answer. I searched the forums and got 3.5 stuff only.

Liberty's Edge

for reference, here is the PRD snip:

Attacks of Opportunity

Sometimes a combatant in a melee lets her guard down or takes a reckless action. In this case, combatants near her can take advantage of her lapse in defense to attack her for free. These free attacks are called attacks of opportunity. See the Attacks of Opportunity diagram for an example of how they work.

Threatened Squares: You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your turn. Generally, that means everything in all squares adjacent to your space (including diagonally). An enemy that takes certain actions while in a threatened square provokes an attack of opportunity from you. If you're unarmed, you don't normally threaten any squares and thus can't make attacks of opportunity.

Now, what are you talking about with the term "Base to Base"?

If you look in pathfinder on the Actions in Combat chart, any ranged attack causes an attack of opportunity. So if any ranged combatant is threatened by someone and makes a ranged attack on anyone, the one threatening them gets an AOO.

Also note that bows do NOT get AOO's. You can only AOO with a melee attack.

Thank you and I have contemplated that myself. Is using a ranged weapon against a melee combatant in a threatened square considered a reckless action. I would think so, but can see my player dancing around that ruling.

Thanks! Saw that but needed clarification, as it is somewhat ambiguous.

Base to base is a wargaming term. It means two models are as close as they can get to each other without one base sitting on top of the other.
