Dominate spells

Rules Questions

I assume it's been pointed out before that Dominate Person and Dominate Monster have a duration of 1 day/level while Dominate Animal has a duration of 1 round/level. Has there ever been an answer given about why druids get screwed on that one?

Sorry if this is a commonly asked question!

Dominate animal is 2 levels lower. Also more things under standard encounter tables qualify as animals rather than humanoids. Thus typically it's combat potential is larger.

From a fluff perspective, I do see it as something that druids would only use sparingly and for very short term. At least from a canonical druid point of view.

Hmm, I guess 2 levels lower is a good point, but it still seems extremely odd to me that it's easier to control humanoids for long periods of time than animals (which can be trained with tricks to act a certain way in the first place...)

Also, personally, I see a whole LOT more humanoids with class levels than any sort of animals in campaigns I tend to play and run

There's been much psychology research on things like this. While it certainly takes more time, it is entirely reasonable to condition people to behave certain ways. Most of what kept slaves in place was psychological, since a sudden uprising of slaves could easily overrun their immediate masters; most failed due to outside intervention. The movie Shawshank redemption dips a little bit into the idea of institutionalization which is very similar. Also it's harder to give exact orders to things that aren't intelligent, because the beast might simply understand it.
