False Life max Hit Points

the spell text says, "While this spell is in effect, you gain temporary hit points equal to 1d10 + 1 per caster level (maximum +10)."

so if you roll a 10 and you're 5th level, you just get 10?

No, the +1 per caster level caps out at 10. So the most you can get is 20 (if you're 10th level or above and you roll a 10).

If that were the case, you could never get more than 5 hit points of healing from a Cure Light Wounds, which has a d8 as a base.

Nope. "Max +10" means that you gain at most 1d10+10 when you're 10th level.

This is worded exactly like cure spells, which you should have seen before. The maximum refers to the extra level-based addition. In the situation described, you'd get 15 points.
