Compute monk's flurry of blow attack bonus

monk level 4, Str 18 (+4 mod)
the flurry of blows rules say "For the purpose of these attacks, the monk's base attack bonus is equal to his monk level."
but there is also the Flurry of Blows Attack Bonus, for level 4 is +2/+2

so, I'm thinking 4 +4 +2 = +10/+10?
am I doing this correctly?

The flurry of blows chart in the rulebook shows what the bonuses are including the modified BAB already. So you just need to add in the STR attack bonus (and any other modifiers the character might have). In the example you gave it would be +6/+6.

No. When using FoB you use the FoB bonus + your strength mod.

The correct total attack bonus for your character is +6/+6.

The FoB section already has added done part of the work for you. All you have to do is add strength, and any other modifiers that come from outside sources like buffs.

Heheh. No, but I am amused at your math.
Flurry of Blows is basically two-weapon fighting for your hands (or feet, or knees, or elbows... etc)
So you attack at (HD) BAB, but you also take a -2 penalty for attacking with multiple weapons. The Flurry of Blows Attack Bonus is not an extra bonus on the side for using the Flurry - they simply did the math I just mentioned for you.

Namely: +4/+4 (BAB), -2/-2 (TWF) = +2/+2 (Flurry of Blows Attack Bonus)
+2/+2 + +4/+4 (Strength bonus) = +6/+6

EDIT: Ninja'ed!

ahh, and Weapon Focus (unarmed strike) would them make it +7/+7, because flurry of blows is a bunch of unarmed strikes?

Correct, so long as he isn't using a weapon as part of the FOB.

Another way to think about flurry of blows is
* full Base Attack Bonus (instead of the 3/4ths Monks get normally)
** extra attack at -5 at 6th level, just normal Base Attack
** extra attack at -10 at 11th, extra attack at -15 at 16th - again, just like normal Base Attack.
* Two-Weapon Fighting Feat at level one, that you cannot turn off.
** Improved Two Weapon at 8th level(when your actual BAB reaches 6).
** Greater Two-Weapon Fighting at 15th level (when your actual BAB reaches 11).

All bundled together. Makes things, well, slightly less confusing, anyway.

Monks are not easy to build well. You can build monks that do solid damage in combat while having decent AC and amazing saves/defenses/escapes, but it's not easy.
