Diabolist imp familiar and familiar

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I've one small question...
If a wizard with a familiar choose the diabolist prestige class, he can have two familiars?
As I can understand from books he will have his wizard familiar and an Imp familiar (from the diabolist class), is this right?

Thanks.

the imp eats the other familiar. I'm pretty sure the prestige class states so. Regardless 2 familiars is a no go.

They are mechanically different. You gain an imp companion with diabolist. The companion would be far superior as it would get stronger as you leveled up and gain powers. There are two ways to go about this for the GM. First would be that the familiar gained through the familiar class feature of the wizard would turn into the companion for the Diabolist, thus wasting the improved familiar feat. Second would be summoning a separate imp and binding it as a companion for the diabolist class and maintaining the imp familiar as well.

I stand corrected. You're right. The imp is a companion as a druids animal companion is.

Imp Companion: A diabolist forms a close bond with a
particular imp, similar to a druid’s bond with an animal
companion. The imp is loyal to the diabolist (though
ultimately loyal to Hell). The imp companion’s abilities, feats,
Hit Dice, and skills advance as the diabolist advances in level
(see next page). If the imp is slain or the diabolist releases it
from her service, she may gain a new one by performing a
ceremony requiring a 24-hour ritual to conjure and bind the
new imp to herself.

No reason you can't have a familiar and an imp. though I still think the imp would eat the familiar, but thats role playing, not mechanical.

I think the wizard would be better off having a smaller, normal utility familiar. The Compsognathus(tiny dinosaur) from bestiary 2 is great as it gives +4 init.

So I'm able to have a Mephit and and Imp... or two imps.. imteresting...
Thanks for solving my doubt!

Well keep in mind that if the diabolist levels don't stack with your wizard levels for the purpose of determining the abilities your familiar get, he will not gain further HD, AC, abilities etc. does the levels stack or not? if yes, a good combo, if no , well idk, go for it anyways lol. From what I read above it looks like a legit combo.

Without regard to the topic, why is 2 familiars a no go?

Usually, you decide that by two factors, balance and style.
I see no problem with balance (familiars aren´t that strong) and no problems with style (I could even picture wizard in a lonely fortress who has a vast army of familiars, homonunculi, bound demons and all kinds of golems, maybe an eidolon - no PC of course but a "golem crafter" kind of wizard could easily be one in regard of style) so what´s the problem?

The familiar won't gain extra AC, but he will gains HD, so you still having a good help in combat if u use the correct spell combo with him (remember that you can use the shield and mage armor on the familiar and give him +8AC or use the mirror image and give him some protection).

Core class abilities do not stack with prestige class abilities unless it explicitly says so. This applies to the domain powers of wizard and cleric and Channel Energy and Arcane Bond.
