My player's dwarf is reaching fourth level. He is unsure where to put the ability point.
Derthgar Oakenshield
3rd level Dwarf Ranger
S 15
D 13
C 17
I 10
W 17
C 7
(We roll for stats)
AC 19 (Breastplate, +1 ring of protection)
Atk +7 Mwk Urgosh
Right now he wants to continue being a ranger, but is planning on taking cleric levels further down the road (provided he survives, of course!).
I thought the obvious answer was Str, but he made a pretty convincing argument for Dex.
Anyone care to comment?

a ranger with an Urgosh, so two-weapon-fighting I guess.
Str would be my first guess. dex helps AC and for feats.
As you hinted that survival isn't that likely, Con would perhaps be useful.
Wisdom would be useful a bit later for cleric, depends how serious he is about cleric.
My suggestion, if he doesn't need feet prerequisites, Str, Con,Dex, Cha/Wis.
Altough I have to say that I'm not really that experienced with rangers.
For other, the build would help.

I would put it in Str.
You can get +1hp/lv or +1 AC with a feat. You can't get +1 to attack and damage with a single feat.
AC bonuses to armor are a lot cheaper than weapon bonuses, too.
The only other things Con and Dex are good for are saves, which are the Ranger's good saves and easily boosted with an inexpensive item.
