I want to run a Dungeon campaign one of these days, using strictly adventures from the mag.
It's from the Paizo era, I've wanted to run this one for a while. Let the heroes defend the crypt from the tomb raiders for a change!
I've run several campaigns out of the mag over the years, and it plays out pretty well. More of a "wandering adventurer" feel than the "gotta save the world", which is nice IMO.
I actually am only missing 12 Dungeon magazines, and those are the real early issues. :)
Isn't that one with the Black Blade?

Sad zombie misses Ravenloft.

Uggh, coversions.
I have found that anymore I have the most fun if I just 98% freestyle the games I run. I just figure out vaguely what obstacles/people the PCs will encounter, come up with some names, and write down a few numbers. Then, I wing the rest. It seems that when I "prepare" stuff or use a module I kind of unintentionally push toward the things prepared without giving much time to those not and it feels like a boring railroad, IMO. I guess I should consider myself lucky that, for me, spending less time means a better campaign anymore.
I'm finding that converting stuff from 2nd edition is odd. It's almost difficult for me to even remember the rules from 2nd edition. How do you convert "100% spell resistance"? And creatures didn't used to have stats. Just makes me more glad we have this system now.

Spell resistance was based upon caster level, 11th I think. Every level lower than 11th would increase resistance by 5% and every level above 11th (if that is the correct number I am remembering) would decrease resistance by 5%. The mechanics can be conveted straight to d20 but I would need to think if a conversion factor would be appropriate to even things out power wise. One such as adjusting everything by a constant (increase or decrease SR by 5, etc. or something similar could be used.
Edit: On second thought, I read the above as not actually asking how to do it but rather just commenting on the types of things that pop up. Silly me.

Pretty much. Most things I'm needing have already been updated/converted anyway. It's just that reading the adventures/supplements sometimes takes a little extra work. (That, and it just reminds me of all the reasons I was thankful for the 3rd edition changes at the time.)

The Thing from Beyond the Edge |

Well, I am finally starting to make headway on my civilization the rpg game. Players are putting their things together and I am making all my maps as well as various power groups..
It started with the following idea...
Beginning note: The "sent to" list is by no means a done deal. Those are just the first names to pop into my head when composing this. I also spoke in person to Derf and Rose. I believe it was Derf who said this sounds like "Civilization: The Roleplaying Game".
General Idea: I have always liked campaign settings with a rich history and many developed sites, regions, etc. However, it is an enormous amount of work to create such a setting. So, I figured why not start at the beginning, make a game out of it, and get my friends to play, or at least participate.
Setting: A new world has formed and the primal forces of creation have opened and closed countless portals to other worlds. Plants have been warped over as well as countless animals. Plus, many sentient species have warped to the world that is still in the throes of its birth. Sometimes only a handful of animals or "people"may be warped and other times great herds of animals or schools of fish or virtually an entire town of people may be brought over. No one is for sure how long this has occurred and although some grouos of sentients have managed to survive, many more have perished. Your character has just been warped over and is most likely near a group of sentients that has also been warped over. Make your mark on history! Note that dawnforge has partly influenced me in this idea.
Game Rules: The idea is to go with the rule of cool and I am not worried about broken. I prefer it.
Character Creation
1. Create a 20th level gestalt character using Pathfinder rules for the classes and skills and feats, etc. But, sure, you can throw in any 3.5 stuff. Also, third party stuff is acceptable with my permission: run it by me first. Sadly, no homebrew. ;) Have a concept, personal goals for the character, and the character's goals for himself.
2. Abilities: three 18s, two 17s, and one 16 before race adjustments, leveling, and magic. Races allowed: Sure, just be sure to include the ECL on both sides of the gestalt build.
3. No deities, so clerics (and any class requiring deities including favored souls and paladins but not including druids) are SOL until they can find a deity UNLESS you can come up with a good idea how they can receive spells from their deity from another world: use both good fluff and try to find rules (feats, etc.) to justify it. Also, I am perfectly happy with PCs/NPCs worshipping deities that do not answer. :P
4. Ask me about prereqs for 3.5 classes using PFRPG rules. Basically subtract three from the skill rank required if it is a class skill of the character prior to selection of the prestige class or leave the rank requirement the same if it is not.
5. Remember the rule of cool rules and that broken is a preference except when given up in favor of the rule of cool. The idea is to make legends, deities, etc. to give a campaign some depth.
6. Leadership: There is no epic leadership feat. Calculate your leadership score (Power of Faerun is a good reference for leadership calculation modifiers...) and if it goes over 25 then consult the epic chart. This can be broken. :) "Influence" will not effect leadership to limit the breaking.
7. Followers can be PC classes or NPC classes. NPC class followers will get general equipment for their class for free while PC class followers will have peasants clothes and the player must use his character's wealth to purchase equipment. Determine numbers before fleshing followers out because I may put a cap on the number of those allowed to be brought along.
8. I really would like detail in this but it is not necessary.
Game Play
Basically, two messages or posts per week. I will tell each of you how the time period starts. You will tell me what you do for the period, one message. I will notify of any happenings and then you would respond with a second message. If you forget or are unable to respond...you or your henchmen or your kingdom does nothing but others may do something to them. Empires and heroes and deities all rise, fall, and disappear. That will give depth to the campaign setting. So, don't worry if your lot gets destroyed. You get to re-enter in some way or other with an old or new idea/concept.
Sometimes it might be necessary to have characters battle each other or an NPC/monster on a Saturday and some time or other it might be necessary to have a battlesystem battle too.
Time periods will go something like the following: first week IRL will be first week of game time, second week IRL will finish out the first month game time, third week IRL will finish out the first quarter game time, and the fourth week IRL will finish out the first year game time. The fifth week IRL will finish out the first five years, i.e years two through five. The sixth week will finish out the first 20 years. Not sure from there.
I haven't yet decided whether or not I will need people outside those I see on a regular basis to help with ideas to start an "area" with a powerful character, etc. It seems to be a little more work but is fun so far.

It's all good, I can roll with the story. I love the RP aspect of a game, and exploring emotions and motivations is a bi-i-i-iiiig part of that to me. :)

That would be nice, but I barely have time to run Kingmaker. There's no way I could adapt anything from Ravenloft.

Good Morning FAWTLiers! I hope everyone's weekend went well.
All of the boys are now back at school, the last one flew out last night. We had a fantastic time! I just wish they all lived closer. Fortunately, I'll get to see my two Minnesota sons next month over Easter and then its about a month until school is over.
And Jeremy, if you have love to spare, I do encourage you to adopt. Raising a child is an expensive, gut wrenching, illogical, harrowing, crazy roller coaster ride that is worth every moment!
Hurray, my 1,000th post on Paizo is a tribute to child raising.

The coffee is done. The back also feels kind of done...I didn't bring my Aleve last night, and Mrs. M said, I'll lay down on the couch until they get here, and I made you a place next to the couch on the floor. Maybe the floor will be good for your back.
It wasn't. So got almost zero sleep for hours we were waiting over there. Damn, I think another visit to the back doctor may be in the cards.

Still cold out today, but a look at the long-term weather shows temperatures of 7 or 8 Celsius showing up for the rest of the week. It's possible that I may have survived another Canadian winter. I'm hesitant to get excited about it, as that's when Old Man Winter jumps out from a hiding place and beats me over the head with another blizzard.

I've found running a PbP less time-consuming than I thought it would be. You can prep until you're blue in the face, but the thread can only move so fast. And since I'm making my own adventures, there's nothing to convert. When I need a ghoul or something, I just open the bestiary and use a PF ghoul. Statting NPCs is about the most time-consuming part of it.

Goooooood morning deep 6 fawtl! Still posting via phone, but I have to admit this is pretty cool, being able to check the message boards anytime, anywhere. 11,did you see my pics of my friends and I dressed as the cast of characters from left 4 dead last year at Halloween? There were other posts I wanted to respond to but this is the only one I could think of right now.

No snow here, just unseasonable cold. Clear, sunny, and 19 degrees.
