I am both flabbergasted and infuriated.
As those suffering through my ramblings over the years are all-too aware, I take a great deal of pride in my bureaucratic abilities. I have letters of apology from the DMV and the IRS. I prompted an executive at Global Megacorporation to threaten United Health Care with the loss of over $100 million in business a year. When U-Haul cost me $30, I cost them $10,000. When Home Depot ripped me off for $1300 and had the gall to threaten me, I cost them $50,000.
I am one vindictive S.O.B., and after 17 years in academia and 23 years in corporate life, I know my way around a bureaucracy.
So when the city of Albany sent me an email saying, "We are only allowing online business license renewals from now on. Go to this site to pay your fees. We will not provide assistance and we will not take in-person payment," I figured no big deal.
After 29 years of filling out web forms, I finally met my match. The interface is SO arcane, and SO unsuited to my situation that I had to give up; there was no way to provide the information they were asking for. A good example: The house is co-owned by 4 people. Yet the web site only allows for a single owner with a single taxpayer ID. So, I manage it, but my mother is the primary owner. Whose taxpayer ID do they want? Then it proceeded to go into many, many more questions focused on storefront businesses and not rental properties. "How many customers enter your property on a given day?" And 0 isn't an acceptable answer.
It was fundamentally impossible to fill out the form for a multi-owned, single-family residence that was being rented out. So I gave up and sent a nasty email. I look forward to seeing how they attempt to "help".

Workshoes. Period.
I might be convinced otherwise by high quality hiking boots, but I have yet to set aside enough to get a pair.
Until then, workshoes.

My job provides me a boot allowance. Has to be a safety toe, though. So I tend to wear the work boots at work and not elsewhere. Of course, I don’t change shoes to go shopping after work. Not this time of year. I just change out of the work shirt. But in the summer, the uniform gets changed out for shorts and sandals.

Minor grumble about useless search results:
Hermione is doing a middle school research project about NASA's Artemis program. I took her to the library. Our municipal library system has *nothing*. So I look online. Amazon has a handful of books available on e-reader format.
WW, looking over my shoulder, says, "PLEASE don't give them money; check out (name of random pirated book pdf site redacted) instead."
So I looked.
I did a keyword search for "Artemis".
Out of over 200 pages of results, guess how many were lesbian fae erotica?
After figuring out how to limit my string to nonfiction, I found a total of seventeen titles that looked like they might have a relevant page or two, but only one of these 17 actually did. And it wasn't good.
So I'm going to go with my original plan and just not tell him.

Right now my single-best pair of non-tennis shoes is some steel-toed Wolverines. They were pretty cheap, yet they're better than anything else I own.

I learned my lesson about cheap work boots pretty early. I'd just started my first "real" construction job in my early 20s, and picked up a pair of Brahmas from Wal-Mart. They fell apart in about two weeks. Since then, I've gone with either Carolina or Red Wing, though the former has taken a huge dive in quality over the last four or five years.

Yesterday as I'm going through my route this lady drives up to my truck in her Lexus suv and asks if I can skip ahead to her place towards the end of my route because she was "going to the grocery store and I don't want to have carry the groceries very far" she had her husband with her. I of course, said "no, we'll get there when we get there".
A few hours later she drives up and asks if we got there yet, I look at the progress of the other crews helping and say "it doesn't look like it yet!" She then gets all mad and says "you know, it's ONLY fair you start on our end next time!" I told her she didn't get to tell me which end I start on and every place will be done just as well" and then she says "well, it's only fair and it's almost 5 o'clock (it was 5 minutes before 3)" I pointed out I'd been there since 3:30 am and we got a foot of snow and if she had a problem with it to call the number on my truck. She said "oh I'm not calling the number, I'm calling The President! Of the homeowners association" I just said "go ahead!". Lol she's better off calling the office, I treat our office people (we have pretty cool office people) way better than homeowner association presidents.
For the record, the main reason I start one the one end is because that's the end with the most difficult driveways and I always do the hardest thing first. Always.

Y'know, my garbagemen run a route that is inconvenient for me: The first two trucks come by one after the other at around 8:00 in the morning, then the third truck doesn't show up until 11:30 or 12. And yet it never occurred to me to complain to their management and say, "Hey, your guys need to change their routes because it's inconvenient for me and I'm the center of the universe."
I feel that ALL such requests should be punishable by a public paddling.
EDIT: OK. *Almost* all. "My wheelchair-bound grandmother is getting home from the hospital at 3:00 pm today so I was wondering if you could alter your route just this once so we don't have to try to shove her wheelchair through the snow," is a LOT different from, "I'm too lazy to carry my own groceries."

Yeah, at my old school in California, there was a teacher who had a lot of faults, but the most irksome was that, whenever we had a campus cleaning day, she would sit and drink tea while the rest of us worked, then when the boss came by, would industrious pretend to be scrubbing an area that I had already finished.
I got her fired. Not for that.
She sent a kid to the ER because she shared her nut-filled snack with him because she "didn't believe in all that nonsense", i.e. the food allergy safety list posted in the classroom.
Point being, half-a$$ery often goes with other character flaws.

Sadly, it would not be likely to stick in court. Attempted murder requires intent to kill. In this case the whole problem is being too stupid to understand that such course of action endangers life.
I am pretty sure there are lesser chargers that could have been applied, though.

The boss is making everyone in the company come in this week to look over my neighborhood so everyone knows the proper way of cleaning up snow. And the city fire department is sending out someone to take pictures of the fire hydrants so they can distribute it to other companies as an example of the correct way to shovel around fire hydrants.

OK, here's an odd one for all you tech people:
Starting about a month ago, my internet cuts out at exactly 9:35 PM Central time, and stays off for exactly five minutes before turning back on again. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

I'm at a loss, though that's not surprising, given that my technical knowledge is only slightly above "it goes into the wall" level.
My initial guess would be that:
(1) A remote patch was pushed to your router about a month ago. I'm guessing at 9:35 pm Central time.(2) Something went wrong with the download, so it checked the checksum, recognized was it bad, marked it for reinstall in 24 hours, and went to sleep.
(3) As with most modern programmers (who should be burned at the stake for abject stupidity), instead of deleting the download, purging the cache, and starting fresh, your router tries to finish the already-corrupted download. (And yes, I have a long tirade about the number of game servers, software servers, and upgrade servers that pull this asinine, stupid-a** s*** just to save the company a tiny amount of bandwidth from the additional downloads.)
My recommendation would be to try a power cycle first (turn it off and on again), because that may help it figure things out. *IF* you're comfortable with it, do a factory reset, but that means re-configuring your wireless network and firewall routing, which is usually a PITA, so please don't do it unless you've done it before.
Otherwise just call your provider and make them fix the darned thing, or wait for Vanykrye to chime in.
As I said, my guess it that it's confused, and it won't get any better without help because it'll never patch again.
EDIT: Sorry if I seem a bit passionate about it, but Impus Major's Windows machine wouldn't patch for FOURTEEN MONTHS, and I finally sat down for 3 hours with it, Google, and the Microsoft support site to find out where it stored the d**ned temporary files for Microsoft Update. Deleted all the temporary files and voila! Everything worked perfectly and the machine's been running fine ever since. Because if you download it and it doesn't work, you should throw it out, NOT try to fix it!!!!

ha! brag about it all you like! weather is weather.
that said, though . . . .
i just went outside to check on the animals, and it looks like it might have snowed throughout the entire night. i haven't seen this much sustained snowfall since i was in elementary school, iirc. even if there was a break in the precipitation.

Interesting...
I provided all of the case details to my legal representation firm, they reviewed the case, and they assigned me a fair-sized law office in downtown Oakland to be paid on contingency; i.e., I don't pay a penny, they take it all from Progressive.
So I guess lawyers smell blood in the water here. I didn't think it was a particularly interesting case. I thought I'd have to pay a lawyer $250 to write a threatening letter and make a couple of phone calls and it would be done.
Now I'm very curious as to what the attorneys will tell me once they call me. Unfortunately, I suspect the very first thing they will say is, "Do not post ANYTHING about this case on social media," and unlike some public figures I know, I'll obey.
Once it's all over I'll post the gory details.

Big fan of trail runners. Lighter weight but with the good grip of boots. I don't think there's a lot of extra ankle support, and the one time something landed on my foot it wouldn't have mattered if it was a shoe a boot or steel toed that foot was getting squished.
Trail runners are awesome. I've found they're usually a bit wider across the ball of the foot, which is a bonus. There's a Canadian brand I used to like, but the last pair I had, I accidentally melted by resting them on the edge of a fire ring.

Speaking of IT glitches and sales blunders, I wanted to buy a game on Steam, which usually goes without issues... This time it glitched and now I can't proceed anymore getting an info there is a transaction pending...
Rule #1 in tech: Things go wrong.
Rule #2 in tech: The most efficient solution is to start over from scratch.Rule #3 in tech: No programmer believes Rules #1 and #2, so 90%+ of all non-user-error issues are failed downloads/transactions that the system won't let you clear and retry.
EDIT: Says the man who just this afternoon lost network access on his Windows machine and had to manually roll back the driver to restore it. Because the new downloaded driver is corrupt and doesn't work, but Windows won't download a new version of it because it's marked as already downloaded. Starting to see a pattern here?
