A not very surprising one?

Aaaand... it didn't fail to surprise me in the least.

The first instanced building we went into was bugged out and we couldn't interact with anything, but the quest line kept progressing as if we were doing things. So we quit for the night.

Yep. Bethesda, through and through.

I've never really had any trouble with bugs in the Bethesda games I've played.

We finally got in some Redfall last night, and it's pretty sad: Deep Rock Galactic costs just over 1/10 as much and, in my mind, is a much more fun game.

I'll give Redfall a few more hours to see whether it gets better, but as usual, I'll take gameplay over graphics any day of the week, and Deep Rock is fundamentally just more fun.

NobodysHome: Oh kay...
(Goes to the Steam store. Notices the publisher)
NH: Uhh... it's a Bethesda game. Are you guys sure you want to try it?
TG: Bethesda's only the publisher, not the developer! It'll be fine!
NH: Oh kay...

So all of us downloaded it in its 77 GB entirety last night.

Today is the official release day.

And yep. We all had to RE-DOWNLOAD all 77 GB, leading to the question, "Why the h*** did you have me download 77 GB that you knew you were just going to throw out?", and even more importantly, "Why the **** did I ever buy another Bethesda game?"

*checks-checks*

Ah, that game. I even have it on my wishlist, and today I got a Steam email notifying it's available.

Uh-huh. The current review status is "mostly negative" in nicely contrasting dark red...

I like Arkane, but they have technical issues on par with Bethesda (yes, Deathloop, I am looking on you with your unbelievably long load times and crashes that are so more painful because of the loading times, I have yet to get back and finish it, despite being a lovely game in a way).

I have got it in a bundle. I have yet to install it and give it a try.

I tried the Deep Rock Galactica and while it was sort of funny, I got bored after second or third mission.

Speaking of which. I wonder if there will be anything interesting in this month's bundle which will be revealed in four hours.

Playing solo I can absolutely see that. It's definitely a "play with friends" game.

I'll probably get Redwallfall when it goes on sale in a year or two, with at least some bugs taken care of, and so on and so on.

In other news, it's funny how much marketers can absolutely ruin a brand.

I really liked the simplicity of iDevices, so for years I bit the bullet and paid the extra money for them.

But now, every single day, every single device asks, "Don't you want to connect to iCloud? Your device setup isn't complete unless you connect to iCloud!

And I've Googled how to turn off the reminders, and the answer is, "You can't."

And now last night the iPad ran another update and guess what? Now I have a second daily reminder. "You haven't set up iPay! You can't use this device to pay for things unless you set up iPay!"

Daily reminders of things I don't want that you can't turn off.

Good job, Apple. There's a reason the last time I needed to purchase a smart device I went with a Motorola instead of an iPhone.

EDIT: And yes, there are articles such as this one that claim that they'll disable the reminders, and that worked for a while, but iCloud changed its licensing agreement and I refuse to agree to the new license, and THAT is my new daily reminder. Plus iPay. Plus Cloud on my Mac Mini. *SIGH*.

LOL. I swear, people are *SO* accepting of bugs these days.

Shiro deleted his saved game, re-started, and the second time around as a solo player he got past the bug point.

So, "All we have to do is reset our progress and start over and it'll all be fine."

How much did I pay for this game again?

Ouch.

Sorry, didn't know you were thinking about getting it, I would have told you "Don't!"

I actually started hearing the chatter a few weeks ago that it was going to be bad and then when I started watching reviews for it yesterday it was confirmed. Also a coworker got it and his review was "It's not just a buggy game, it's also crap" followed by "it's not just the worst game this year, it's the worst game of the last two years!" I asked him "Why not the third?" "You obviously haven't played battlefield 2042!"

I've also heard the new Zelda game has some serious frame rate issues in places.

No idea why, the Switch is the pinnacle of gaming technology.

Well, Shiro and GothBard are bound and determined to try to make it work, so as I'm going to write in my Steam review of the game, "Sometimes the reason you play is the quality of the company, not the quality of the game."

OK, CY, your friend is indeed wise in the ways of gaming. I'm listening to GothBard and Shiro trying to play a new game.

It turns out that the save game system is completely bugged. Shiro tried to continue with his old character and it was so bugged out he deleted it. GothBard created a new character but didn't delete her old one and the system remembered everything she picked up, so her new character couldn't pick up a weapon in the tutorial because they were all gone, and the tutorial wouldn't let her leave because she didn't have a weapon.

They're now on their third full restart of the game... and Shiro's just crashed out as they tried to start it.

EDIT: And there we go... not even half an hour in and it sounds like GothBard's game is bugging out enough they'll need a fourth restart...
we'll see...

EDIT 2: Nope; they're gamely playing on. As long as at least one of them can see a quest item, they can keep the game going. It seems more like they're trying to win the challenge of, "How long can we keep playing until neither of us can progress the questline?"

That's an impressive level of commitment, if nothing else.

Son: "Did you know that protons have mass?"
Me: "I didn't even know they were Catholic."

Limeylongears wrote:

Yeah, it's hard for me. I'm very firmly in the camp of the "educated consumer" -- if someone puts out a crap product, I return it to discourage them. If you accept crap, you'll get crap forevermore.

But 80% of our social life is online gaming, so I need to go with the flow of whatever game they choose. And, for reasons beyond my understanding, they chose this one.

My favorite quote of the night? "After playing Back 4 Blood, I'm pretty sure we could play this game in its most extreme mode without any troubles at all."

So...
...for the first half hour of gameplay it's buggy as heck...
...you can only have one saved game at a time, so if GothBard and Shiro want to play with me and Lara Croft guy tomorrow night they're going to have to delete the campaign they worked on last night...
...it's so easy that we're only playing it for the story, which all the reviews say is thinner than single-ply hotel toilet paper.

I have no idea why I'll be playing this game other than that I don't want to disappoint my friends by refusing to play it.

But yeesh. Avoid it.

Ah, people are such fickle creatures!

The family wants more vegetarian dishes for various reasons. I make a pretty tasty lentil curry. For a while, I managed to make it vegan, but the evolution has been predictable:
GothBard: You know what would make this better? The little cheese cubes they put in palak paneer!
(NobodysHome cheats and uses extra-firm tofu to keep it vegan)
GothBard: OK, that's better, but I think you should go with the real stuff.
(NobodysHome goes ahead and buys real paneer)
GothBard: You know what would make this better? Some lamb!
---
Impus Minor: What's for dinner tonight?
NobodysHome: Lentil curry. Is that OK? Do you like lentil curry?
Impus Minor: I prefer any kind of "regular" curry, but I guess lentil is OK.
(The implication being that curry without meat is "irregular")
---
And somewhere, my Indian colleagues weep...

If you really want to upset them, make the '70s White British home-cooked version of curry, namely mince, a very small amount of curry powder, and as much chopped fruit as you can cram in.

*shudder*

Well, after three more full campaign restarts (I'd say, "This one goes to 11," but I think our grand total was more like 6), we finally figured out how to actually play Redfall: You have to host it on the most powerful machine available, because otherwise if the client gets ahead of the host it bugs out.

So, I built my desktop last year but I don't like to host because I'm around the least. But after trying everyone else's machine, we hosted on mine and it ran just fine with almost no bugs.

It's still a fairly meh FPS set on super-easy mode, but at least the crashes have stopped... for now...

I think the true horror was my parents' version of "curry" from the 1970s:

2 tbsp Spice Island curry powder
3 quarts/liters water
2 pounds/1 kg untrimmed cheap-as-you-can-get-it, the more gristle the better lamb
2 russet potatoes
2 carrots
2 granny smith apples

And that was it. Cut up the ingredients, throw them in a pot, and boil it for 2 hours.

It was... unspeakably awful. Similar to their "beef stew" which was similarly unseasoned water with cheap beef and a few vegetables thrown in. The fact that I can eat stews and curries these days is a testament to the resilience of young stomachs.

That surprised me too, but apparently he hasn't rebuilt his machine in a few years and mine was very high-end as of last year. I suspect it's also the 32 GB of DDR5 RAM and 12 GB of VRAM -- hosting everyone else's game doesn't make my machine bat an eye.

EDIT:
Here we go, from March of last year:
Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Pro Z690
CPU: Intel Core i9-12900 Processor 16 (8P+8E), 5.2 GHz
RAM: 32 GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR5 5600
Video Card: Gigabyte RTX 3060 gaming with 12 GB of VRAM

Elden Ring is absolutely worth it, even if you don't usually like FromSoftware's games (which I do not).
