There's "not dangerous", and then there's, "Warm enough to function."

I find anything below 58 to be too cold to effectively sit at a computer working all day, so that's where I set my thermostat.

So, I read the introduction to Book 2 of Shattered Star with a HUGE grain of salt. "Oh, we'd been trying to get this guy to help us write an AP for YEARS, and he finally relented and did this one for us, we hope you like it."

Yeah.

It is rapidly becoming my favorite book of all the APs I've run, and I haven't even started running it yet.

But seriously.

Minor spoiler:
A trap that casts Phantasmal Killer, and if you fail you inhabit a clone of Runelord Sorshen and get to roleplay through that little fiasco? OMG!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

Plus the added web content (which I love) plus an extra side module because he couldn't fit everything into a single book (which I need to buy)...

SO excited to start running it!

I have to admit. Mob Psycho 100 is substantially better than its art style, premise, or concept suggests that it should be.

It's, like... really good. Like, really good.

Having now seen both seasons, the second is, in fact, better than the first, though the ending of episode eight just about made me quit the show (the episode itself was lovely). I’m glad I didn’t, and, though I know why they left it there, I don’t agree with leaving that sort of thing as a... thing to end on.

I feel it should have ended with,

Spoiler:
him noticing the smoke coming from his house

... as, though less dramatic, it’s plenty dramatic enough, and the tonal whiplash doesn’t actually hurt you; leave the rest to the next episode.

Speaking of, MP100 has tonal whiplash, employs it like a carefully placed sniper bullet slash surgeon’s scalpel, and frankly does a phenomenal job, that one moment aside (and it’s still a very powerful moment - I just think it’s too much for what it was at the end of that episode).

Anyway, it’s over-all fantastic and really well done. I wanted a few of the female characters to have more stand alone time or have their own focus episode, but they did pretty well. Also, I would totally watch a show about the body improvement club just

Spoiler:
going around and being excellent dudes.

Anyway, MP100 is a much better anime than the premise of an emotionally distant elementary school kid with psychic powers, than the intentionally-ugly art style, or the weird obsession with food would seem to suggest. It’s better than his master, Reigan, being a con artist fake psychic suggests - and he is better than that suggests, too. It is secretly a kind of slice-of-life that’s much less secretly a battle anime, which is slightly more secretly a morality/think piece.

I personally like Saiki K. better, but though they both star OP protagonists with weird psychic powers, the two shows are very different. Mob Psycho 100 has a doofu tone right up until it gets super serious and actually confronts and grapples with moral questions and does so intelligently and thoughtfully. I don’t necessarily agree with all of its answers, but that’s okay, because I don’t think MP100 does either - I think we are meant to go through a middle school kid’s journey as he hears all these differing and sometimes contradictory things from adults and he’s got to learn how to apply each one at any given moment. Saiki K. is mostly just a good time - it doesn’t strive for depth, it is strictly entertainment. I don’t think it’s “better” - I just like it more.

MP100 is one of the better anime I’ve ever watched. I can see why Geoff (“Mother’s Basement,” on YouTube) rates it so highly, even though it’s nowhere near that high on my list.

Speaking of great anime. Re:Zero - yes it is, shut it, no I don’t care and/or that’s part of what makes it a great, genuinely and actually great, anime. Except for the part where it’s only gotten a single season. If you want a grim dark fantasy Isekai anime that does grim dark well, but also has bright and happy and outright delightful moments and deep seated mirror holding discussion about both protagonists of Isekai and otaku culture (the watchers of the show) all without actually talking about those thi BT s directly, this is your anime. Also got cute girls who can murder you.

So, I loves me some Re: Zero, and I'm typically a fan of ONE, but for whatever reason I just can't get into Mob Psycho 100. Everyone insists it's awesome. Most people say it's better than One Punch Man. But... I've read the manga. I've watched the anime. I even watched the live action show...
...and it's just not for me.

One of those weird, "There's no accounting for taste" things.

Though yes, the Body Improvement Club is just all-around awesome.

Strangely, I didn't get into Re:zero.

I enjoy the cosplay, but not the H, which is a weird situation.

I am far more of Konosuba persuasion when it comes to this kind of show, even with the mirror stuff discussed.

I kinda like the character designs for Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon, but the show itself is too slow for me.

Maybe it's time to check out That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime.

See, I think this is entirely fair. As much as I love it - and I do - there are quite a few things (some of which are at least somewhat intentionally) off-putting - including quite a few of the character designs. Mob himself is intentionally uninteresting (and that is part of his story). While the battle anime psychic nonsense can be enjoyed on its own merits, the better parts are really just the deeper characterizations and the kind of introspective elements that are brought along side of those.

I don't know that I consider it better than OPM, though.

Freehold DM wrote:

That is strange!

(I mean, I'm not familiar with either the H or cosplay scenes, but from all descriptions I would have thought it was the other way around... though I'm not surprised you like the cosplay.)

Freehold DM wrote:

Well, okay, that makes sense.

Freehold DM wrote:

The character designs are quite good, and the story is pretty nice, but I feel it gets a little too... indulgent? In many ways, it's the kind of fantasy that both Re:Zero and Konosuba criticize, even though those are both Isekai and IIWTPUGIAD also what the what is with that name is not, in fact, an Isekai.

Freehold DM wrote:

I like it! I would prefer that some of the things develop at least somewhat differently (and the weird guy with a dagger in the opening is just... just... what?), but over-all it gets good and remains enjoyable for most of it.

Yeah, this is a good description!

That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime is a lot of fun. I am SO waiting for another season to be made.

Is it heavy? Nope. Mostly just a lot of fun. If you like/want Grim-Dark seek elsewhere. I do think that there is more than just what you see on the surface though. (Not 'Deep', but thoughtful/interesting) Why/how DOES this character have such an effect on the world around him? Why does he seem to be the only one who can effect such change? Even though apparently it is common knowledge of the cause/effect by the population of the world? Etc.

I also liked Is It Wrong to try and pick up Girls in a Dungeon?
It is fun, Although at times I wonder if each episode had different directors? It seems to jump around a lot with the characters reactions/emotions. (Probably just one of those meant to be fun, dont over-think it) ;)

My son is seriously into Dragon Ball Z right now, (he has the newest game and everything) I must admit I have started to watch it and it IS surprisingly enjoyable.

And of course, My Hero Academia, Is. Just. Awesome.
"I HAVE SPOKEN."

Cool, what else ya got? I'm curious to see what I may want to add to my list!

I tend to agree - I wouldn't suggest that "light" is the same as "shallow" (though there are a few shallower elements to it).

I like the bouncing around between folks, but Bell himself seems humorously light on engaging characterization - mostly he seems to gather women by just being so gosh darn cute.

I used to love DBZ, and still do in many ways.

... buuuuuu~uuuuuuut, DBZ:Abridged gets you through the whole story (admittedly with a lot more cursing, so, eh) a lot a lot faster with many similar character beats (and a few unique ones that work really well). The original feels so much slower, now.

Ragadolf wrote:

Well, I mean, I love The Disastrous Life of Saiki. K. (on Netflix).

If you ever have the chance, see Record of Lodoss War - though I can only recommend the OVA, as I've not seen enough of the series to say one way or the other; it is basically D&D: the Anime. (Fair warning, though, as with many anime, the OVA ending just sort of... comes on fast.) It can be hard to come by, though.

And I had to go away for a while, just realized Inever posted this, and never really got back into it, so I've just forgotten anything else I had here. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We really enjoyed My Hero Academia season 1. But then it lost its way and became yet another generic anime show about a group of young heroes facing all-powerful, all-knowing villains who can somehow predict and counter every single thing the heroes are going to do.

And it got really, really tiresome, really really fast.

The kids insisted we stick with it, and Season 3 was an improvement, but it's still just a, "We'll watch it if we realize there are new episodes and there's nothing else on," kind of show.

I mean, GothBard re-watched Soul Eater in preference over new episodes of MHA, so it's really low on our list.

LOL. I am rather ashamed that I could physically outperform my dad at virtually anything once he turned 48 (so I was 12), and I was significantly stronger than him by the time he turned 54.

I'm 52 and I can still outperform both my kids at any physical activity that doesn't involve climbing or balance (curse you, Impus Major).

Step it up, kids!

Wow, really?

I mean granted, it's one of the first/earliest Animes that I've ever gotten into, but even so,...

I didn't get that vibe at all. I see it a group of young heroes doing great (usually keeping up with the 'professional' heroes) despite their immaturity and inexperience, going up against villains that are beating 'professional' heroes on a regular basis. With all of the teen-angst and other stuff that goes with it.
(OK, I do see how sometimes it does seem like the villains are always one step ahead, but I think that makes a good villain(?))

My son has read ahead in the Manga, and he says it just keeps getting better according to him. We love the characters and personalities and interactions, etc.

But to be fair, I've never watched "Soul Eater" either,.. soo,.... take my opinions with a grain of salt.

Hah! That's great.

Can't really compare me to my dad, as by the time I got old enough to really compete with him, he had already lost a leg and an eye , Soooo,... ;P

My kids are pretty physical, my 16yr old son lifts weights because "Dad! I want to be RIPPED", and my College-age daughter still dances and performs in shows as often as possible, so she's still in good shape.
Of course, I just turned 54 this week, but I still perform in shows, (musicals, so singing and dancing) and do stage combat on a (semi) regular basis for fun, and running a stage isn't usually very sedentary, so the old Wizzie aint out of the running just yet! :)

Still, if things keep going the way they are, I may not want to arm-wrestle my not-so-mini-me soon! ;P

Well, I found out why the garage has no water. There's road work going on in the street beside the garage. So they turned off the water without telling anyone about the work. Again.

But, I have a plan for the restroom. It snowed here overnight and into the morning. So I took a couple of buckets and the shovel up onto the roof and filled them with snow.

They're starting to melt, right now. When they're done, I'll use that water for the toilet tank. Drinking water will be a bit of a problem, but I'll take care of it over the weekend.

My father could almost certainly outperform me physically when it comes to strength. The heart issues probably reduced his endurance to the point where I could outperform him in long term activities... Maybe.

Back from Broken Birds Birds Of Prey. A fun movie, in a Borderlands' comedic sociopathy (with a bit less gore and blood-splatter) fun way.

TIGER AND BUNNY FOREVER

FH: AGREED!

Okay, dude, this doesn't seem like reasonable working conditions.

I can't say that your garage is necessarily at fault (because someone's doing some street work), but it doesn't seem like you could be expected to reasonably attend work in these conditions, and, while you need a paycheck, it seems like this is something that needs to be addressed by your employer (probably by them reaching out to the city, to go, "What the crap; no really, and literally, what the actual crap; also, more figuratively: what the crap?") and figuring out something in which you have humane and reasonable working conditions. Because what the crap.

The 19th century called. They want their working conditions back...

MHA is the generic shonen show of the week, which isn't a bad thing. It's great fun to watch but I don't expect it to be any better than Bleach or Naruto, or even DBZ. Which is still a fine accomplishment!

Slime Isekai and DanMachi are super enjoyable shows that don't leave you worn down with heavy plots or negative emotions. I think the best thing about them is the protagonists being actually likeable, even if Bell is incredibly dense.

Finally watching Re:Zero now that the director's cut is airing and it's pretty much everything I heard it to be. It's so tempting to go binge the rest myself, but that would be a betrayal of our weekly anime night code.

As for new stuff to watch, Fire Force has some promise in becoming the next piece of the Big 3 shonen shows with the way it is going. The dub is hilariously bad, but apparently in part due to the original writing being ridiculous as well.

I also highly recommend Soul Eater, especially if we ever get the 'Brotherhood' treatment to follow the manga ending.
