Druid Wild Shape attack and damage question

Rules Questions

I have a druid, 16 str and 14 dex.

At 4th level he wild shapes into a medium grizzly bear (beast shape 1).

Assuming no other spells running or magic, his strength is now 18, and AC is 14 (10 +2 dex, +2 Natural Armor). Right?

What are his attacks? The same as a bears?

To Hit: 2 claws and 1 bite: 3 bab +4 str = 7
Damage: d6 + 4

Is this correct? or is it something else?

Grizzly bear from PRD is Large, so you'd have to [ask your DM to allow you to] change it.

You can simply decide it's Medium, or apply the Young template (you can't normally apply templates to creatures you polymorph into, but Young, Advanced, and Giant are simple templates that should be available - it's even mentioned in the Druid Archetypes section of the APG). The Young template mentions many things that don't impact your shape, as the Beast Shape spell doesn't give you the exact monster's stats. The main thing it that the damage dice are reduced by one step.

Turning into a Medium creature through Beast Shape I gives +2 to Strength and +2 Natural Armor, so your numbers are right (not counting other things towards AC, like the Dodge feat or a Ring of Protection).

Barring special attacks or effects, you gain all the natural attacks of the creature, so that effectively gives you 2 claws and 1 bite, but (as mentioned before) they do 1d4 damage instead of 1d6. And BSI doesn't give you the grizzly's Grab ability.
So, your attack sequence would look like this: +7/+7/+7, 1d4+4

Nice? Yes. Just remember that your druid's AC isn't that high (you lose any armor and shield bonus you might have), and that he's now a meleer with 3/4 BAB and d8 HP.
However, with the Natural Spell feat, you could cast the following buffs on yourself:
- Bear's Endurance (more HP)
- Barkskin and/or Cat's Grace (more AC)
- Magic Fang, Bull's Strength, and/or [APG] Natural Rythm (more offensive power) - remember that the +4 from Bull's Strength doesn't stack with the +2 from Beast Shape I
- [APG] Bristle (more offense for less defence)
- [APG] Lockjaw (to regain that Grab ability)
- Longstrider, Spider Climb and/or [APG] Feather Step (for movement)

Now that you have a shape with natural attacks, you can also [ask you DM to allow you to] take the Improved Natural Attack (claws) to bump your claw damage from 1d4 back to 1d6.

.....

you gain all the natural attacks of the creature,

Darn, I need new glasses. Missed Large completely. Thanks.

Can you point out to me where it says that you gain the natural attacks? I've looked under Druid and under Beast Shape, but either my glasses *really* need updating or it is not mentioned anywhere.

Polymorph spells really need to be changed to allow templates.

It's in the general description of polymorph magic.

Yes. There are three entries to read. Wildshape, Beast Shape and Polymorph. :)

Actually, Bull's Strength and the Strength bonus from Beast Shape (any version) DO stack. The Beast Shape spells provide size bonuses and penalties, while Bull's Strength is an enhancement bonus.

So cast away!

I forgot that and stand corrected. Strange things, those "size" bonuses.

Another note: Polymorph rules include "you don't count your armor and shield anymore" and "you keep your creature type" but also "can't stack polymorph spells" so no Enlarge Person for the Wildshaped Druid... unless you decide to allow the Enlarge Person to dismiss your wild shape.

AHA !! Thank you!
