According to the Perception rules you can taste a potion to identify its powers with a DC 15 + Potion CL check.
What i want to know is if that tasting has any effect? Do you gain a small amount of the potions effect from tasting it?
What if you taste a Harm potion? Do you take damage?
Now what about poisons? If someone tastes it to try and detect what effects the "potion" has, does the poison effect them?
If so how much?
Thanks for the help in advance

As far as I know, you don't take any effects from trying to identify potions and/or poisons. I think the idea is that you are trying such a small amount of the stuff that it has no real impact. You might want to throw in some flavor (after tasting that Potion of Haste, you feel like you just drank a cup of coffee), but there's no game effect.
You might make the argument that since poisons are usually much more concentrated than potions, even a small taste could be deadly. In that case, I would lower the save DC of the poison considerably (say, -8), but keep the effect the same.

thanks to you both,
i do like to add flavor to the tasting but at the same time it seemed weird to me that even trying a small amount of poison wouldn't hurt someone.
I think i will take your advice Tamago and keep all poisons the same but lower the DC by half and just try and focus on the flavor for potions a lot more.
Perhaps a bit more fun to, something along the lines of a characters tongue turning black for tasting a negative energy potion heh.
thanks again :)
