I have been away from comics for several years now, but I was always a fan of the superhero genre and Marvel more so than DC. A question for those of you that read the current Marvel comics which ones would you recommend me picking up?
The last time I was actively reading comics was before the Civil War event, though I do know the basics of the Civil War storyline. Generally I was a fan of the X-Men, and Spiderman. Though a lot of the X titles I found unreadable. I liked the work that Straczynski did with Spiderman, and I really liked his stand alone series Rising Stars(not Marvel I know). X titles, I likes X-Factor(though I've only read the first 6 or so issues), I liked Exiles at least the first couple of dozen issues. My feeling on the Avengers are fairly neutral, and usually the Hulk or Fantastic 4 annoy the heck out of me.
Basically I would like your suggestions of a few good titles to read that will let me follow the Marvel storyline without being bogged down with all the junk they tend to publish.

I don't collect many books anymore, but here are a couple suggestions.
Heroes for Hire - the series is only two issues in, with the third due for release in a couple weeks so it'd be easy to catch up. So far, the writing has been pretty solid and the revolving cast of characters makes it a different and interesting take on the old anthology series' like Marvel Team-Up. Very cool if you prefer reading about the lesser known characters of the MU. So far, they've featured Moon Knight, Falcon, Black Widow, Elektra, Silver Sable, Ghost Rider and Satana with Misty Knight and Paladin serving as the anchors. Can't recommend this enough.
Thunderbolts - T-bolts is probably the most consistently well-written team book in the Marvel catalog, and the latest incarnation of the team might be the best lineup they've ever had.
Books to avoid:
Any of the thirty titles starring Deadpool, or pretty much anything Deadpool is in.

+1. BIG Thunderbolts(Hawkeye Roster) fan here, while I don't care for many of the changes made to the book overall, it's nothing if not consistent good writing. Dimly considering picking it up again.
Avengers Academy is good so far- Marvel has finally learned their lesson in that we NEED a second-line-superheroes(or superheroes in training) comic, and after a few failed attempts to get New Warriors(one of the best comics I have ever read) running again, they seem to have hit on gold with Avengers Academy. There is already at least one person hitting the con/cosplay circuit dressed as Veil.
Ant Man and The Wasp was good, but short. Should have kept that running.
Age of Heroes- Superheroes, Age of Heroes- Villains, and Age of Heroes- X-Men is great reading for any Steve Rogers fan, as it is essentially the current year of Marvel Comics told from his pov. In short, good stuff.
It's sad, but I think that's about all I read from Marvel nowadays- I've switched over to DC mostly now. Probably because I'm getting old.

I would say skip Marvel and pick up IDW's Dungeons & Dragons and Dark Horse's Star Wars Legacy: War. If you are determined to go with Marvel the the a fore mentioned Avengers Academy and Thunderbolts are good places to start.
Nice new icon.
Yeah, the D&D comic may be 4th ed, but it's DAMN good. Star Wars Legacy has yet to disappoint me.

Yep, I decided it was time for a change. I was seeing too many people with the same avatar popping up around the boards. It was getting confusing. Also, it is hard to tell the edition within the confines of the story. I also like that they include a character sheet for one of the characters in each issue.

Although I mostly agree with this statement, I am enjoying Uncanny X-Force which has Deadpool in it. Now this is probably because I enjoy Fantomex.
Agree with you on Heroes for Hire being a good choice.

Out of curiosity what makes the comic 4E? Are character shouting out "Reaping Strike!" or something? I haven't read it, am and unlikely to, but I am curious if the game mechanics of 4E D&D actually come out in the comic itself.

I'm very fond of this current run of Thor, though they are right in the middle of a story & it could make jumping on difficult. New Avengers is also very good. Not your typical Avengers title.

The current story is only a couple issues
spoiler alert
if you want to skip Asgard coming to the US outside Bronson, OK; and its fall to he ground and the superhero war; which doesnt have a lot to do with the current story other than Asgards lack of resources; then that should be no problem. If you like; I can give you which issue to start the current story and fill in any details you like from what I call the End of the Civil War, which I think ends when Earth and its allies battle Asgard and its allies; or you could say Harry Osborn and his allies vs Thor and his allies which amounts to the same thing.
