If a creature has a constant SLA of say, detect evil, does that mean he automatically knows if theres an evil creature within his sight, or does he still need to concentrate manually as per the spell detect evil?
In other words if evil John walks up to Bob with detect evil as a constant SLA, will Bob automatically know that John is evil, or does he need to concentrate on John to find out whether John is evil?

Bob automatically knows evil has drawn near, unless there was already something evil within his sight, or he was looking the wrong way - detect evil is a cone. He has to concentrate for two rounds to see where the evil is.

A Paladins or Inquisitor's ability to detect evil arrives from concentration for at least two rounds and is not a constant thing that is up at all times.
For Role Playing purposes though if the DM should want to let you then it is up to him/her to further the plot in that way if they want. :)
Im referring to creatures with detect X as a constant SLA.
