Hello there,
I had a player ask a great question, and I could not find the answer. I admit upfront that my search-fu is weak at times.
His question was:
Do you need to roll a diplomacy check, as discussed on page 94 of the core book, to get the cast-a-ways to fill camp roles?
Under their headings, it says that they may fill these rolls, but not that they volunteer for it.
My initial feeling is to have them volunteer, but then what are the point of the morale and attitude mechanics affecting diplomacy DC's in the first place?

First off... feel free to have the NPCs react to roleplaying from the players as makes sense. If the players are SUPER NICE to some of the NPCs and help them out and give them things and otherwise just be friendly, but it never dawns on the PCs to make Diplomacy checks, it's perfectly cool (and GOOD) if you as the GM just arbitrarily assume that the NPCs' attitudes shift to something more friendly.
However your players do it, though, they have to make the NPCs at least indifferent before the NPC will agree to help around the camp. Whether or not the NPC volunteers for the duty at that point depends on that NPCs' personality and your desire to see the PCs get some help.

Thank you all for the speedy replies.
I was leaning in that direction (i.e. Having them volunteer), but the group has already reached the point where they are all at least indifferent.
I was just wondering if there was an intent to have the diplomacy check be more involved with getting them to participate in the setting up camp and all.
Thank you once again,
Berwick
