Chevalier & Smite Evil

Rules Questions

When a chevalier uses smite evil, does he only use his chevalier levels or all character levels to determine additional damage? Also, when critting, does the smite evil additional damage also get multiplied?
Thanks!

Not familiar with the specifics of that particular ability, but in general:

If an ability says class levels, its levels in that specific class.
If an ability says character levels, its the characters total number of levels in all classes.

As for critical hits, extra damage dice (such as sneak attack or the Flaming ability) do not get multiplied, while static numbers (like Weapon Specilization) do get multiplied.

What book is this in?

It's on page 63 of Children of the Void, part of the Second Darkness AP. Unfortunately, that means it's a 3.5 prestige class, not a Pathfinder prestige class.

It is all character levels. Smite damage is multiplied on a crit.

Paizo Publishing

Seems like a broken prestige class.

For 3 levels, what good fighter wouldn't take two blanket immunities, smite evil once a day at his character level, extra damage the first round just because he's reckless (how does that even make sense?), a reroll against charms and compulsions, and aura buffs for the party?

That plus none of those pesky restrictions a Paladin has?

Upon reflection, I've decided I won't be allowing this prestige class into my game again. While hardly a huge game breaker, it really is an unbalanced class. That's an awful lot packed into 3 little character levels, without really any cost.

Human Fighter 17/Chevalier 3. Overpowered and awesome!
