Summon Monster spells and Celestial Template

Rules Questions

When a Good Wizard casts Summon Monster and the creature is one with an * in the table it receives the Celestial Template. So for instance a Wizard casts Summon Monster I for a Dire Rat, it has the template.

Can the Dire Rat use the Smite Evil part of the Template, assuming the Wizard has no way of communicating with it?

I am having a difficult time assuming that an animal intelligent creature (int=2) would use the ability.

I assumed they'd blow their smite on the first attack after being summoned.

Greetings, fellow travellers.

Same here. Since the duration of the spell is pretty short, I also assume, the smite happens on its first attack.

Ruyan.

I usually have them use on the first target, as smite lasts longer now.

If the caster can talk to the summoned creature, then I allow them to direct it's use on a specific target. Or if they pass a handle animal test.

I meant the duration of the summon, just to clarify.

OK. I'll let my player know, thanks for the responses.
