It seem that you basically must be in town to use craft. You need to have the raw materials and your not guarantee to find someone selling them out adventuring.
If your campaign takes place in a town this isn't really a big deal but if you only visit a town after each mission you better hope the party stays long enough for you to finish your items.
It is easy to stack your Craft (alchemy) skill if your an alchemist. That means that a fifth level alchemist(with the Master Alchemist feet) could make alchemy items in hours. This seem useful if your party is preparing for a fight they know it would be beneficial to have certain items.
Also at 18th level an alchemist can make alchemy items as a full-round action. The fact that they gave you the time as a combat round action it seems as if your suppose to use this in combat but this seems useless unless you purchased the raw materials ahead of time. If I purchased the raw materials ahead of time why didn't I just make the item six seconds after buying it? Unless "and he has the appropriate resources at had to FUND the creation." means that I can assume that I bought the raw Materials earlier.
It would be nice if there were a magic item where if you threw money into it raw materials would come out.

You can buy the raw materials in town and craft while on an adventure (see magic item creation, Pg. 549). At least that works for Magic items. One could rule that it would work for non magic items as well.
The Alchemist class feature does assume that you purchased the raw materials ahead of time, you probably just forgot. :)
As for the magic item, yeah that would be pretty convenient.

How many hours a day does an adventure get to work on his craft skills, I know its 8 hours for making magic items but there isn't a listing for crafting.

I would rule it to be the same as a magic item, and it's 4 hours if you are on an adventure.
Yep, you basically can work 4 hours on it. Bits and bobs here and there, during lunch break, when you're on watch, whatever. Takes 4 hours of time/day but you get 2 hours of work done. Basically 4 days adventuring is good as 1 dedicated day crafting.

What I did is said I spent 900 gp on misc raw materials and store them in my bag of holding. As for how long to craft, my 8th lvl char can make items in minutes. :)
If you'd like to find out just how fast you can make things, check out this spreadsheet I created.

In town, buy 8 vials of A, 2 vials of B, twenty vials of C. In the field, you can make item AC, item BBC, or item BC, to replenish your store of premade stuff, depending on what you need. (In other words, maybe you set off with half acid and half fire, but you use up all your fire and want to make more.) From a chemistry or alchemical POV this makes sense -- it's easy to imagine there'd be some overlap of ingredients which would lead to this being a more economical way of doing things financially and burden-wise. Also, maybe some of the ingredients ARE common -- maybe the acid or poisons can be prepared with water you find in the field, making it MUCH lighter and safer to carry it around as powders.
Mechanically, I think it'd be reasonable to buy X gp of alchemical "stuff" in town, and then to use it while adventuring to craft what you need as the need comes up.
