Mystic Thuerge?

So... Why does the Mystic Thuerge suck? I love the idea of a dual caster but any character made this way is massively underpowered until way late in the game. Does anyone have a suggestion for this?

I just use the Gestalt rules from Unearthed Arcana and be done with it. Note this prevents you from taking the Mystic Theurge class itself in most circumstances, but honestly, once you're Gestalting there's no real need to.

You already answered the question of "why it sucks" in the opinion of most, it's a PrC that doesn't come into it's own until the higher levels and most players don't stick with characters for that long.

There are many, many threads on this and other forums about how to make it better, ranging from "don't play it" to actual advice, the most popular of which seems to be to talk to your GM about letting a character become a Mystic Thuerge at a lower level.

Something along the lines of "Cast level two spells in one class and level one in another", allowing a character to enter the PrC at level five rather than seven.

Hmm... dropping it to a level one in one class and a level two in another doesn't seem too bad. In that case a level 10 character with 1 Wiz/ 3 Cleric/ 6 MT would be able to cast level 4 arcane and level 5 divine spells. That certainly doesn't seem half as underpowered as before.

This idea requires playtesting!!! *Scurries off*
