Blind Ranger's Blues

Advice

I have a player who has created a character that has been blind since birth. I believe that he's based on the Zatoichi series of Japanese films (about a blind warrior) that began in the '60s. Anyway, I've allowed the character--this player's not a powergamer, and the concept is way too cool to ignore--and I was wondering if anybody on these hallowed boards have any suggestions to make this work fairly well, without gimping the character for--what I believe--is a flavor choice for the character. Any suggestions?

For the first adventure I allowed the following, with the caveat that I would most likely change the way it worked when I had more time to think about the impacts on this campaign:

Spoiler:
Blindsight to 30 feet, but no visual senses and still takes the -4 penalty on Str- and Dex-based skills.

Silly me. I just found this thread, by searching for "Zatoichi". Heh. I'll read this thread I found, but would appreciate any advice here, regardless. Thanks for your time!

I haven't read that thread but Tremorsense 30ft would be interesting. Blindsight 30ft. is probably a better option though. He can't see ranged attackers, he can't read, he can't see color, but he won't ever get sneak attacked either.
