If this is specifically stated in any book someplace, then please exccuse my asking something I probably ought to know.
In a Society game, a plyer asked to copy a scroll into his spellbook, but the spell was above the level he was able to cast at the time (he was still level 2, and it was a 2nd level spell). The DM at the time ruled that he could not, and while we did move past it, we did discuss it briefly, and I dont know that I agree with the ruling.
His reasoning:
If you cant understand it to use it, then obviously you cant understand it to copy it.
My reasoning:
I may not understand an advanced calculus problem or math algorithm when its written in front of me, but I am definitely smart enough to copy it down word for word and little for little symbol.
I didnt see anywhere in the core that it specifically said that a character cant copy a spell of higher level than they can cast into their spellbook/ familiar/ potions book, but I didnt see anywhere it said they can either.
So, if this lined out anywhere? If not, then what are your thoughts/ how would you rule it?

There is no text that limits copying a spell into a spellbook based upon the level of the spell. If he can make the spellcraft check (take 10 is ok as well), he can copy it.
+1
Heck he could have even casted it off the scroll provided he made the check to do so.
The only requirements to add a spell to a spellbook is to understand it (spellcraft check or read magic)and have enough money (spell ink) to do so. If he had a 9th level spell on that scroll he could have added it if he met the requirements..
