So I'm trying to make a sweet-sweet ranger character and I'm trying to get my head around the kinds of commitments you have to make while doing your build.
My question is this- so if I wanted to take the Guide character option - which replaces favored enemy and terrains and I was happy with that - but then wanted to also take the Skirmisher option - which replaces spellcasting - can I do that?
Are you restricted to just having one of the sub-class options? What about in this case where their benefits/changes don't overlap? Obviously double-stacking these kinds of options is out of the question when they do overlap, but when each of the options replaces a discrete section of the main class - that seems like a fair way to go.
But is it within the tolerances of the rules?

A character can take more than one archetype and garner additional alternate class features, but none of the alternate class features can replace or alter the same class feature from the core class as another alternate class feature. For example, a paladin could not be both a hospitaler and an undead scourge since they both modify the smite evil class feature and both replace the aura of justice class feature. A paladin could, however, be both an undead scourge and a warrior of the holy light, since none of their new class features replace the same core class feature.
So yes, you could as long as the two don't overlap on even a single class feature.

With my favourite example being the Drunken Master Monk of the Sacred Mountain of the Four Winds...
yeaaaaah
most classes dont have as many different archetypes that can potentially stack.. For instance I'm pretty sure that all the Fighter archetypes replace the same abilities so you cant take more than one
