Questions on the Fatigued and Exhausted conditions

Rules Questions

Quote:
Exhausted: An exhausted character moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –6 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. After 1 hour of complete rest, an exhausted character becomes fatigued. A fatigued character becomes exhausted by doing something else that would normally cause fatigue.
Quote:
Fatigued: A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a –2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued.

1) Does an exhausted character need to rest for 1 hour to become fatigued, and then, rest 8 hours more to no longer be fatigued?

Quote:

Forced March: In a day of normal walking, a character walks for 8 hours. The rest of the daylight time is spent making and breaking camp, resting, and eating.

A character can walk for more than 8 hours in a day by making a forced march. For each hour of marching beyond 8 hours, a Constitution check (DC 10, +2 per extra hour) is required. If the check fails, the character takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. A character who takes any nonlethal damage from a forced march becomes fatigued. Eliminating the nonlethal damage also eliminates the fatigue. It's possible for a character to march into unconsciousness by pushing himself too hard.

2) Upon failing the second Con check in a Forced March, a fatigued character becomes exhausted, correct?

3) If so, once a character is exhausted from a Forced March, is this character exhausted until ALL the nonlethal damage is healed (from the first and second fail)? Or only exhausted until the damage from the second fail is healed?...but which damage would heal first, the oldest or newest?

In most cases yes, unless source of fatigue/exhaustion specificially states other duration.

PF mechanics do not recognize between points of damage from different sources - they are tracked as total damage suffered and not each point on each own, thus if second failed check would cause exhaustion it would be removed once all nonlethal damage would be healed and not in steps.

However I think that in case of Forced March second failed check does not cause exhaustion because it is secondary effect of suffering any nonlethal damage from forced march. I think that the wording would be different if it caused exhaustion on second failed check. Of course if the character is fatigued before failing Constitution check he will become exhausted instead.

Okay, thanks. I just wanted to double check because normal rest is 8 hrs, and fully recovering from the exhausted & fatigued conditions seemed to require 9 hrs, so I wasn't sure if the amounts were supposed to be the same, but it makes sense that it takes you longer to recover if you are exhausted.

And when you are fatigued from a Forced March, that states a different duration - which is that the fatigue is removed when the nonlethal damage is removed. Makes sense.

That makes sense about the damage in my 3rd question. That it all has to be removed and not just in steps.

Anyone else have a definitive answer about my 2nd question? If you fail a Forced March check and take nonlethal damage which makes you fatigued, does failing a second Forced March check make you exhausted (if damage from the first fail hasn't been removed)?

This is the case for most things unless specified: such as in the Demoralize (intimidate check) where adding conditions does not progress past a certain point. As far as I know, what you describe is a normal function of the stacking of conditions.
