Build help: Shield + Free hand Magus

Advice

Hey everyone! I'm making a new character for Pathfinder Society, a human Magus who fights primarily with a shield. I took Shield Proficiency and Improved Shield Bash as my first level feats, so I can use it as my primary weapon in combat, and I'm mostly shooting towards some of the neat throwing shield-based Equipment Tricks from the Adventurer's Armory.

I just have a few questions:

- Do I need to have shield spikes on my shield to enhance it as a weapon?
- If not, would I be able to eventually buy a shield that's enchanted as a weapon? Primarily, with the "returning" quality?
- Does a masterwork shield count as a masterwork weapon if it doesn't have spikes on it?

If any of these answers are "no", I'll probably just stick with shield bashin' folks with shield spikes. I'm pretty sure you can use your Arcane Pool on shield spikes, since they're melee weapons and all.

Captain Arcana?

I've been jokingly using "Captain Ameragus" but that's a lot better.

1) Nope! The shield itself can be enchanted as a weapon; See? Spikes just increase the damage that they can deal by one step.

2) See #1. Also, you do have to pay for the weapon enchantment separately.
3) ooo, good question... I have no clue actually.

- No.

- Yes. However, returning can only be placed on a ranged weapon. You would have to add the throwing property first.
- I dunno. I'd rule pretty leniently on it as a GM though (they would only save 150 to 300 gold, which is nothing in the large scheme of things).

Note that the magus will incur the usual spell failure for casting while wearing a shield.

Can the Magus even cast without a free hand? Is it possible to sheathe a weapon quickly with the Quick Draw feat, cast a spell, then Draw it again?

Yes - I'm just gonna eat the 5% spell failure until I can get a mithral shield, which will cancel it out completely.

I'm wielding a shield and keeping my other hand free. Though, with the Quick Draw feat and a quickdraw shield, you can remove your shield as a free action at the start of your turn, use Spell Combat or cast a spell, then put it back on at the end of your turn as another free action. This is the route I'll go if I can't get this idea to work.
