I'm trying to works backwards to determine the ranks for a characters skills but I can't get it all to add up.

The Stat block is at the end and it is from AP 38 page 16.

Skill points: 25 = cleric5, so 5 * (2 + 1) + 5 favored class + 5 human bonus

Climb +6 = ranks 6 + -1 Str + -1 Armor Check + 2 +2 Athletic feat
Diplomacy +3 = rank 1 + Cha -1 + class skill 3
Heal +10 = rank 1 + Wis 4 + class skill 3 + Self-Sufficient 2
Knowledge (arcana) +5 = rank 1 + Int 1 + class skill 3
Knowledge (geography) +2 = rank 1 + Int 1
Knowledge (history) +5 = rank 1 + Int 1 + class skill 3
Knowledge (local) +2 = rank 1 + Int 1
Knowledge (nature) +2 = rank 1 + Int 1
Knowledge (religion) +5 = rank 1 + Int 1 + class skill 3
Linguistics +5 = rank 1 + Int 1 + class skill 3
Sense Motive +8 = rank 1 + Wis 4 + class skill 3
Survival +11 = rank 5 + Wis 4 + Self-Sufficient 2
Swim +9 = rank ? + Str -1 + Armor Check -1 + Athletic Athletic 2 + Skill focus 3

I've run out of Skill Points by Swim, I need 2 more
Can anyone see what I'm missing?
I've got 4 to use on Swim but I need 6 to get me to +9.

I don't think the armor check penalty gets added to the skills in the stat block. If you take climb and swim to 5 ranks you get +6 and +9 respectively before ACP.

Also, the max ranks at 5th level one can put into any skill is 5, so it reaffirms this a little bit.

Just my assumptions on this.

I can see where you are coming from but I thought Skills that are Str or Dex you apply Armor Check Penalties and the +1 light wooden shield is -1.

But then you're correct about the max rank = level too.


Oh, you definitely use the ACP when using the STR or DEX skills. Actually, swimming takes double ACP penalties, but I just don't think they add those items into the stat blocks for NPC's. That way in case the GM has the NPC in other gear it's easier to deal with on the fly IMO.

But a +1 light wooden shield has 0 ACP, since it's a masterwork shield.
