Video Games

I have a question. . .

Is there an (realtively) easy way to copy the background sound files or monster sound files that are in the game, in the editor files. I used to sit my laptop on the table and loop the sound of a cave or the sound of wind blowing, but I would rather put it on my iPod and play it from there.

Any help? Thanks.

First, this should probably be in either the Technology or Video Game forums.

Second, I am not a lawyer, but I suspect that pulling copyrighted content out of a piece of software (which the music is) is probably illegal, as is someone telling you how to do it. (DMCA and all that.) What you have been doing (playing the soundtrack by accessing the game itself) is probably your best bet.

There is a program made/used by NWN modders called something like "MP3 to BMU" which is what it says on the tin--it turns MP3 files into BMU files and vice versa.

You can access the BMU music files saved the NWN toolset and use this program to turn them into MP3s. (Likewise, you can also of course turn any MP3s you have into BMU files and throw them into your NWN toolset to make mods with all kinds of different music).

I am also not a lawyer, but since you are using your--presumably legally purchased--media for personal use only, this would count as making a "backup copy" for the files in question (to which you are legally entitled to 1 such copy) and would be fine as long as you did not distribute the files to anyone else. There may be strict permutations about copying only a portion of the software, so I am not sure about this.

ALTERNATELY, if you buy the NWN Diamond Edition from Good Old Games (gog.com), you get as part of the package a downloadable MP3 version of the soundtrack.

MP3toBMU has been around for a few years hosted on IGN's NWN Vault, so if there was a problem legally, I doubt IGN would allow the file to just sit on their server.

Thanks for the help. And I agree that making a back up is probably not considered illegal.

I use my laptop for running games, anyway (access to the PRD and PDFs is quite useful), so I play my music with the lap, not my MP3 player.

For anyone who is interested:

An immensely useful little tool for GMs! It gives you 30 buttons (or more, you can assemble sets of 30 buttons and change between them via drop-down menu) where you can place sounds (sound effects or songs) and play them with a mouse click.

You can play them once or loop them, and play several ones at once. I use it for music only right now, but if I ever get around to it, I'll get a bunch of sound effects, too.
