Spells for Bards

Homebrew and House Rules

Since I'm currently playing a Bard, I'd like some ideas for low level Bard spells to learn as she gains levels. Currently she has Expeditious Retreat, Feather Fall, Grease, Unseen Servant, Sound Burst, Gallant Inspiration, and Hold Person.

What I would like to see is new and original spells to consider taking. Currently she is 5th level, so 1-3rd level spells would be the most useful for my purposes.

When I get a chance, I plan to post some ideas I have. A couple that come to mind:

1. Song of Craft. This is probably a second level spell, that allows a bard to use his Perform Skill for a Craft check

2. Shoe Cloud. Also second level, creates a swarm of shoes that dance and march and kick any creatures that occupy their space. The swarm can be directed in a manner similar to a flaming sphere, only the shoes do bludgeoning damage.

I'll probably get more ideas later.

Dark Archive

Not a new spell, but I'm suprised you've not taken (Tashana's) Hideous Laughter.

One problem I've found with bards, perhaps touching on the very issue you're raising, is that the credible spell choice for bards sometimes feels a bit limited, with virtually every bard I've seen taking hideous laughter & CLW at 1st level (particularly in PFS).

Shoe cloud make me laugh. I can see the hundreds of tap danceing shoes on the enemy. But I think bard spell list is made limited for reason.

*Pardon my English, it is not my proper language

Depends on what you want to do:

Dispeller: Remove Curse, Dispel magic, Dispel magic greater, Break Enchantment, Remove Fear.

Enchanter: Charm person, Hold person, Fear, Hold monster, Suggestion.

Back up Healer: Cure Wounds, Remove Fear, Neutralize Poison, Heroes Feast.

Spy: Undetectable Alignment, Invisibility, Misdirection, Detect Thoughts, Modify Memory, Geas/Quest.

Sage: Identify, Locate Object, Clairaudience/Clairvoyance, Scrying, Legend Lore, etc.

Traveler: Comprehend Language, Alarm, Tongues, Phantom Stead, Tiny Hut, Locate Creature, Shadow Walk.

Torturer: Cause Fear, Blindness/Deafness, Detect Troughs, Fear, Dominate Person, Mind Fog.

Summoner: Summon Monster 1-5, Summon swarm, Phantom Steed, Miss ((not the best chose, but to each his own)).

Bard: Songs, spell that create or dispel sounds, Illusions,

.......

Last is Old World Elf = Start out as Back up healer 1-3, switch to Traveler 3-4, then end with Sage/Illusionist 5-6.

.......

I'm not too good with making new spells. However, there are a couple of bard spells even at first level that I might suggest:

Level 1 - Remove Fear, Saving Finale, Timely Inspiration, Vanish.

Fear can wreck a party pretty fast, the next two spells help a good deal with saving throws, and the ability to momentarily be invisible is always nice.

Good luck buddy.

I forgot, Nora does have Hideous Laughter, except that I've changed it to Dolorous Sadness. Does the same thing, except the target cries instead of laughs.

I've got long workdays ahead for the next few days, hopefully this weekend I can write up my spell ideas.

Suggestion is probably my single favorite spell in the game. It has it's limitations, but the things a creative player can accomplish with it are simply cruel. If any creature with an int of 3 or higher is involved in your encounter, Suggestion has ridiculous utility. Even better if you take Tongues as well.

As the rest of the group in my Eberron party began referring to it, the Buff Cake (Inspire Courage) with Sprinkles (Good Hope) combo.

Since they're different types of bonuses in PFRPG Good Hope is so freaking good for a Bard to pick up. Also Haste is never a bad idea. With some coordination from the rest of the party, Pyrotechnics is a good pickup as well.

Liberty's Edge

Unless your party is already chock-full of divine casters, I recommend ALWAYS taking cure [whatever] wounds spells.

Suggestion, as previously mentioned, is very useful and is another essential, in my opinion.

What I was hoping to see was bard spells that people have invented. Currently I am thinking of taking Charm Person for the next 1st level spell -- that could be useful, especially with Spell Focus (Enchantment) and something that enhances her Charisma.

* One idea that I have is something that is sort of the opposite of color spray. It creates a rainbow-colored ribbon of light, and allies who touch it can choose from a selection of minor boons such as a temporary increase to an ability, or healing. It would probably have to be 3rd or 4th level to be balanced.

* Another idea is solid notes that provide cover for those standing behind them, and can provide an obstacle for those trying to move through them.

* "STOP! In the name of Love!" Forces the target to stop his movement, although he can continue the rest of his action normally.

I must say, that Shoe Cloud is awesome. I wish there was one of those in LOTRO so I could see it happen. I am pinching that spell for my Pathfinder and LL game.

Adagio
School transmutation; Level bard 0
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M (a drop of molasses)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one creature of 4 HD or less
Duration 1 round
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes

An affected creature with 4 HD or less moves and attacks at a drastically slowed rate until the end of its next turn. An creature affected by this spell is staggered and can take only a single move action or standard action, but not both (nor may it take full-round actions). Additionally, it takes a -1 penalty on attack rolls, AC, and Reflex saves. A slowed creature moves at half its normal speed (round down to the next 5-foot increment), which affects the creature's jumping distance as normal for decreased speed.

Adagio does not stack with itself or with other slow effects. Adagio does not counter or dispel haste.
